Wanting to add fixture to bathroom wall but as a door was removed years ago and the light switch moved we need to know where the electrical wiring is before placing fitting, what is best way?

Buy a simple 230 volt detector pen, turn on power so voltage is in wire ,hold unit against wall ,it may detect wirirng unless its foil coated gib board

Detectors come in a range of prices, good one have 2 ranges of detection, some have variable range. Even some multi-meters have one built in these days. Trademe listings. https://tinyurl.com/ybubg3vd

It's unlikely that those detectors will reliably find wiring in the wall. If it's close to the surface it might, but if it's further away it might not.
What is this mystery "fixture / fitting" that you want to install?

A volt stick wont work. A cable tracer will give you an idea but wont be super accurate.

cut a hole in the wall where you want the fixture and look .

I find my 2 setting voltstick can find most wires in my walls on high setting, and if wire is too deep, i add a short length of wire to it's screwdriver tip(or even a magnet - just tried). Being a sparky i know where most wires are in my place, so my results are a fair test. Do not see a similar model on here though (grey with pull off cover for tip -terminator 2000)

Just go into mitre 10 and buy a cheap stanley stud finder. They have a ac locator and work very well. As a solar sparky we use them for locating cables in the wall for mounting our inverters. As long as powers on they will sense cables pretty accuratly

drill lots of holes until you see sparks. Works every time.

I have a locater which the sub unit plugs into a power outlet and injects a pulsing tone type signal ,Wandering around with the receiver you can even locate cables in ceilings from floor level. It has a narrow receiving pickup . Perhaps you could borrow one
