Orange and white goo from tree root

Has anyone else had this problem, and is it fixable? The garden area is damp, and when digging down I came across a tree root - with white and orangey sort of goo coming from it. It's keeping the ground moist but it's not flooding and it doesn't smell.

I'm a bit perplexed - can anyone help me please?

I bet the tree is deciduous and being spring the sap will be highly active.

Thanks busybee72 - I think we've established it might be stump flux. A friend is a gardener and reckons it's just something to keep an eye on rather than a serious issue.

Sap is highly nutritious so fungi and bacteria thrive in it. Which is fine on the outside of the tree, but if you have open wound (root or branch) then watch for infection.
