Paspalum. Only grass that I can think of at the moment. Grows well over sand and stays green. .

Kikuyu doesn't like frost

My kikuyu copes just fine with the 2 or 3 light frosts we see on Kapiti. Just like it copes with absolutely every other grass problem known to man - because if patches of it die, the grass from surrounding healthy areas just travels on those tendrils/shoots and before long repopulates the entire dead area. You could dowse it in petrol, set fire to it, and in a few months time you wouldn't know there was ever a problem!

Shame I hate the stuff. It's so vigorous it will travel and climb anything. If I didn't weed-whack around all the borders and edges regularly the flamin kikuyu would probably cover the garage and house inside 8 months!

Wonderful spongy stuff for the young kids to play on though.

Buffalo is a better behaved relative of kikuyu. It has to be started as ready lawn or with plugs as it doesn't grow well from seed.

There is also a form of couch grass available which is good for problem lawns.

Couch grass is what you want.
