Dead grass

I have a section in my lawn (1mx2m) where the grass appears to be dying and the lawn seems to turning to mud. This area of the lawn gets very little sun over winter and i notice the birds attacking this section off the lawn often.

I have had a bit of a look and cant see any bugs. Does anyone have any idea about what could be causing this or how i could go about finding the exact cause?

Could it be grass grub?
Google for symptoms/signs & see what you think.
I have the same problem in a 1/2 acre lawn & have treated for grass grub & time will tell if it's worked.

Quite possibly grass grub. They are a bit below the surface currently so you would have to dig a spit (a spade's depth - as a plug) and see if there are any creamy white larvae with three sets of legs at one end and a brown head. The following link will help with id.

Grass grub are best and easiest dealt with around February when they are closest to the surface but if you google Grass grub (if indeed that is what you find) you will get good instruction on how and when to treat. Good luck.

Found a few of the little buggers. Looks like Porina. Its it worth calling someone in to sort it out or is there an easy and effective way to treat it myself?
