straight on to earth - I don't want to use weedmat and haven't nearly enough newspaper to lay first. Has anyone just used the bark to keep the weeds down over the seasons? I'm expecting to have to spray it over time though. Many thanks.

can you ask neighbours, local dairy, on neighbourly, etc for newspapers?

Yes, but 6 inches deep as an absolute minimum, that is 6 off compressed depth, which after a year will be only 4, any less is a waste of time.

What a freakin mess the birds made of my newspaper under mulch. just sayin. looked worse than the weeds.

I have put bark chips down without any weedmat or newspaper and it works well just have the occasional weed

I use shredded branches, weed free for fraction of the price for bark. Lasted 5 years. Have just replaced it. 27 $ a meter compared to over 80 for bark.6 inch layer directly onto soil , well weeded and fertilized first

Doesn't work. Weeds grow past them then try weeding with those lumps there, really, really, annoying. Just mulch, that keeps the weeds down. and breaks down and improves the soil.
