I'm about to buy some seed potatoes, but want some suggestions on tasty varieties for boiling or baking. Have really enjoyed Maris Anchor/Piper in the past, but can't find them lately.

wasgonna, Aug 21, 2:34am
Don't forget there are early varieties and maincrop.

I prefer:
Early: Jersey Benney (boiling)
Early/main: Ilam Hardy
Main: Agria and Moonlight.

Agria is the most popular being heavy cropping allrounder ideal for boiling, roasting, chips/wedges.
Moonlight very similar.

I'm sure others won't agree.

I like Swift. They are a heavy cropper and ready to dig in just 90 days. They taste good too, but not sure if they're good for baking.

Rua.
Good for salad when fresh out of the ground, great for chips later.
Grows like a weed, old school now though, but I still like them best.

Jersey Benney as new boiled potato, lovely for xmas, then Agria all the way!

I like Maris Anchor for the same reason . old fashioned all rounder, imo.

Is the Rua similar to the Maris Anchor? I really did like that one.

I like Rocket for my early crop, nice spud that keeps well.

jonners2013, Aug 22, 2:15am
how do you guys grow your spuds? do you just stick it in the ground and it goes? or do you grow them in a sack with straw?

meoldchina, Aug 22, 2:52am
Just stick them in the ground. My potato patch had a generous dose of horse manure about a month ago and in the next week or so my Swift potatoes will have chitted enough to be planted. I like to sprinkle some potato fertiliser into the ground when I plant them. I do the opposite of what most people do. I dig trenches and put the potato in the bottom of the trench, cover and leave. Once the leaves have come through I then push the mound of soil over the plants every now and again. By the end of November I will be digging my crop. Lovely.

wasgonna, Aug 22, 2:56am
Dig a trench, maybe 30-40cm deep, place spuds at bottom then just cover with dirt. As the shoots appear cover with more dirt. When trench is full continue to mound up dirt over shoots on both sides until about as high or higher than the trench was deep then let plants develop from there.

Note that "early potatoes" are ready when flowers die on plants and "main crop potatoes" are not ready until plant dies away.

Oops: Above post beat me.

If you love roast potatoes Victoria are the best. They're an early main.

If potato and tomato psyllid is active in your area, try an early harvesting variety that's dug before these insects are around that can affect main crops.

Thanks for all the helpful comments. I'm off tomorrow to buy some seed potatoes. Think I'll try the Rocket and Jersey Benney. I do the trench thing too with potato fertiliser, and it's always worked well for me in the past.

My favourite is Cliff's Kidneys waxy so great for boiling and salads.

samanya, Aug 28, 6:11am
They are good earlies down here, along with Jersey Bennes, but I still like Maris Anchor as a main crop.

irenew, Aug 28, 9:21am
Where do you get Maris Anchor from? I bought some about 3 years ago and just loved their flavour, but haven't been able to find them in Auckland since then. I just bought Jersey Benne and Ilam Hardy today but still have room on my window sill for more .

valleygirl16, Aug 28, 9:34am
Im planting rua and rocket and doing the trench thing too.
Does it matter what sort of manure you use as I only have access to sheep, cow or alpaca poo

samanya, Aug 28, 10:40am
Haven't bought them yet . a tad early down here, but i saw some in Mega Mitre 10 the other day.

irenew, Aug 29, 8:09am
Which Mitre 10 was that? I couldn't see any at the Henderson branch the other day.

kindajojo, Aug 29, 10:37am

irenew, Aug 31, 7:55pm

A farmer in Motueka grows purple heart potatoes and sells them at the market, delicious and pretty spuds.

ladyluck110, Aug 31, 9:26pm
Desire? I grew last year, they were delicious, gonna grow again this year.
