I think Desiree are similar to the Maris Anchor I liked. I might get some of them too.

I've got Swift variety already up above ground, and will also plant Jersey Bennes. I grew Purple Passion one summer and didn't like the texture at all; gave them all away.

Rangiora . not much help to you though.

irenew, Sep 4, 2:02am
Wow, I'm impressed you have them in the ground already. Good on you. The weather has been so unpredictable here I think I'll be waiting a bit longer to plant mine in the garden.

kaddiew, Sep 4, 6:35am
It's not exactly tropical here in Kapiti, and I'm sure the frosts aren't finished yet so may have to cover them - but I'm too impatient for waxy new potatoes to wait until Xmas to eat them. : )

I have 4 wine barrels and have already planted 2 each of Rocket and Jersey Bennes. They are always ready before Xmas. The barrels make it extra warm for them at this time of year. Any late frosts I cover the tops at night.

In a month I will plant the Agria and Heather in the main garden.

I do this routine every year and never fails.

We like the Heather potato

irenew, Sep 5, 8:59pm
I haven't come across the Heather potato. What sort of taste and texture does it have?

ladyluck110, Sep 5, 10:04pm
I couldn't find Desiree this time went for moonlight I think it's called

kaddiew, Sep 5, 11:05pm
I like Moonlight because it's a good all rounder, and the only potato (apart from genuine Agrias ) that I would buy in winter from supermarkets or greengrocers. The quality of store bought spuds seems to be getting worse and worse where I live.

ladyluck110, Sep 6, 1:20am
I agree you certainly can taste the difference when you run out of the home grown spuds when you go back on the supermarket spuds are just bland

Cliff's Kidneys for my earlies too, and then the Maori potato Kowiniwini. Average yield but great flavour.

Heather is a great variety to plant and wouldn't plant anything else now,

maynard9, Sep 8, 8:37am
I first started growing Heather 5yrs ago for a chuckle when my son got engaged to the name sake.
She adores potatoes and was overjoyed to be served them up. We didn't really care what they tasted like at that stage - but they were so tasty I have continued on.
Wonderful for boiled new potatoes and potato salads. They hold their shape well and lovely flavour. They have a purple skin and similar in taste to Agria. Nice oval shape and easy to clean and cook in their skins if you wish.

Wow, I love learning about all these varieties. I lived for many years in Peru, the home of the potato, where there are apparently over 100 varieties, but hadn't realised there were so many types here.

samanya, Sep 9, 7:15am
The varieties available has increased over the years . all good.

I'm so thrilled, as I found a bag of Anchor Maris seed potatoes at Bunnings Warehouse in New Lynn yesterday. Can't wait to taste them again. They are so good!

icefinery, Sep 13, 9:29pm
Victoria's (early main) are great for roasting and chipping.

speights40, Sep 13, 9:34pm
We got these this year. Was told by the Garden Nursery that they are the ones the Lions Club buy now for use in their Xmas Lunch & for selling around Xmas time to fund raise. Thought that was a good enough endorsement to try them.

ladyluck110, Sep 14, 2:51am
I decided to buy another bag of spuds, red rascal to go in the main vege garden, decided not to grow corn this year just spuds n tomatoes, have moonlight n red rascal

Dug my trenches today ready to plant out my nicely sprouting potatoes. Can't wait to have them in the ground!

kaddiew, Oct 15, 4:14am
Thought I'd steal a few tiny marbles from my early crop, and was surprised to find some already full size. Must've been the donkey poo I dug in at the end of summer.

After a winter of crappy store bought spuds, I'm really looking forward to my first meal of home grown new taters tonight.

irenew, Oct 15, 7:33am
Good on you! Hope you had a delicious feast. I'm thrilled that 3 of the rows I've sowed have already come up and look hopeful.

paora-tm, Oct 15, 9:06am
Why is it that there is not much variety with potaoes at the supermarkets. I mostly only ever see Nadine and Moonlight - is there a reason that commercial growers mainly grow them? I ended up planting nadine because I bought a bag of sprouting eating potatoes from the supermarket for $2.

lythande1, Aug 31, 4:15pm
I'd say it's like Agria.
