So. essentially this is a thread where grownups argue whether or not eating random shit they found is a good idea. Lemme break it down for ya:

Pros of eating found mushroom:. a free mushroom?
Cons of eating found mushroom: potential extreme nausea, long term liver damage and/or death.

I dunno, kids, seems like a simple answer is available here.

A few straight days of vomiting and diarrhea after feasting on horse mushrooms is a valuable learning experience!

Oh dear! Perhaps they needed a good wash first?

My brother used to cook horse mushrooms at home when we were farm kids. One would nearly fill the frying pan. I couldn't stomach the smell of them cooking!

For goodness sake, people! There are an awful lot of people who know all about the many edible fungi in NZ, including me. If you don't know what to eat/not eat, then just don't, but stop loudly decrying the very idea for those who know.

I have a lifestyle block with a huge garden and have at least 15-20 different types of "mushrooms/fungi" here. Have always been keen to identify and learn what is edible, what is not, what is "special" etc. Some are stunningly beautiful! Could you recommend a good reference - book, website etc which might help me to learn more about what I have here? Thanks in advance.
