What would you do in this situation?

Hi. i had an electrican rewiring the house. on the first day he put a big hole in the ceiling. i understand accidents happen.

the rewiring is bits here and bits there and still going months later. been quite patient - started in december and still not finished!

the hole has been plastered, but as a bit of the ceiling was flakey hes not painting it. im left with a big 2m x 1m plastered bit with brown gib bits showing.

he doesnt want to paint because of the slight flaking. im in two minds as it was an all white ceiling and now its not, and although it needs painting i wasnt planning on doing that till i did the kitchen which is months if not yhears away.

its an old house, but in a new house im sure they wouldnt be happy with it. and im sure they wouldnt leave it like that.

should i ask him to paint it or just wear it and pay for someone to paint it myself?

I would have done an insurance claim. and perhaps as he caused it his insurance should have covered it. If the hole was that big the entire ceiling should have been replaced!

christin, May 13, 12:37am
i didnt do an insurance as i thought hed fix it, but have heard he said :"i didnt tell her i would paint it". i kinda expected that

the hole is big but the celing is big so its not a full ceiling thing. does look obvious though and wasnt expecting tpaint a large celieing now. ill try and upload a photo!

christin, May 13, 12:45am
This is it. An old photo so the main part is all plaster now, so looks better but still have the brown bits around edges so slid obvious

You can tell by the white ceiling light how big it is

is he a registered sparky?
there are a few fake guys around.
depending on the house a bit, rewire should take days, maybe a week, not months.
i would be inclined to give him the boot and go find someone else to finish and check all his work.

christin, May 13, 12:50am
hes a nice guy but maybe just frustrated as its taken five months and still not quite finished.

i never know what day theyre coming they just come when im at work so not sure when ill go home to find stuff moved around in the house (and have had three things broken, once again, accidents happen but no sorry, or mentioned it, i just go home and find broken stuff. )

so thought it would be nice if he did the ceiling for me. since its taken forever and it wasnt like that in the first place. and to make up for the broken stuff.

I guess ill end up wearing it cause dont want to piss the guy off but arguing about it. :-(

christin, May 13, 12:52am
yes hes registered. im surprised it took so long. just bits here, and bits there. seems to be working all the time when there just seems to be random turn ups. he knows where the key is so someone will come around, then nothing for days, then he turns up randomlyl for a day again etc.

i did think about that, but i was told id have trouble getting someone else to finish it as would have to check all his work etc and id have trouble finding someone to take it on.

TBH ill be glad when its all finished! i never know what state ill come home to

christin, May 13, 12:56am
oh and the house is old, and gib hasnt been taken off so some fiddly conduit etc in some places. but the wiring is all up in an accessable ceiling.

like i said, nice enough guy so dont want to cause trouble but hasnt been an easy rewire. not that i have experience but really didnt think it would take months! ive been pretty relaxed about allowing access at unknown times etc but has to stop soon! loll

hound31, May 13, 12:57am
Blow that! that's far too long. Wouldn't hurt to ring around a few firms and see if someone else is willing to come around and finish off what he's done. He sounds quite careless regarding breaking things etc, no respect for your home.
I don't want to worry you, but if he's like that I'd be worried about the quality of his work. If nothing else be darn sure you get a COC certificate at the end of it. whenever that may be.
ETA I do think you're being too nice to him, I'd be wanting a bit off the bill for stuff broken as well!

christin, May 13, 1:03am
thanks. not a lot more to go now. a light to put up, outdoor powerpoint, and a couple of lights to fix. was told would finish a few weeks back, but never did. and have veen told the hard stuffs been done by now.

oh and the freezer was left unplugged too. didnt lose too much stuff, only about $60 worth but maybe thats why im reluctant to pay for painting the celing.

maybe i should claim on my insurance to paint it. and theyll follow up with him? i dont want to pay excess but if i mention im going through insurance to him might get it sorted?

christin, May 13, 1:04am
the stuff broken wasnt too much, just ornamenty things. and annoying a little to find i wasnt too worried money wise etc, just would have been nice to have been told "sorry i broke your wall plaque" etc.

and yes i am being too nice, but dont like conflict. bit of a wuss like that lol.

hound31, May 13, 1:06am
Possibly, I'd be putting my size nines up his rrs by now, and I'm quite patient lol. Also if he has a website, I'd be leaving a not so good review! Doesn't he have insurance to cover that sort of thing?

bryalea, May 13, 1:08am
It should have been fixed to it's original state is what I think. I had a ceiling renewed after a water leakage it a corner. The entire ceiling was replaced as the fixer said the original material was not now available. Cost 8k but only cost me the $300 excess. It is better than the original. Covered plastering and painting and rewiring as well (we put in new lights and spotlights). It shouldn't look worse than it started.

christin, May 13, 1:09am
i would have thought so, which is what i assumed he was going to use.

maybe if i tell him i dont have the money to paint it now and im gonna go through insurance. im not sure how much it would cost. but id imagine a few hundred dollars easily (its a at a guess 5m x 3m ceiling - with all the prep and 3m high)

christin, May 13, 1:11am
it wasnt perfect condition, but the flaking wasnt as noticeable as this big brown bit.

i think hes thinking as its an old house with a lot of work needed (doing it slowly, rewiring was the first part) that why bother?

captaingraham, May 13, 3:05am
If you decide to dump him he MUST issue a CoC to cover the work he has done.

christin, May 13, 3:43am
Thanks. Didn’t realise this. He’s almost finished now.

I’m home now, here is the ceiling. You can’t see the slight flaking on the ceiling but you can def see this!

I have spoken to insurance and they will go through his insurance so will mention I a, doing thar and that gives him the option of painting it first, seems an okay guy so hopefully he will.

It was all white at least before he starrted. Imagine if you left it like this I’m a new house, you wouldn’t, just cause I needed to paint eventually shouldn’t have to have this for months or years!

When our electrician put a hole in a bedroom roof, they paid for it to be restored to how it was before the accident. I would expect your electrician to repair to how it was before.

christin, May 13, 4:41am
That’s what I was thinking. Even if this patch was fixed and painted to match the rest I’d be happy but don’t think I should have to pay for it to be painted myself

joanie32, May 13, 5:33am
We had a similar situation
The issue was that the plumber (in our case) wouldn’t paint the ceiling as he couldn’t guarantee it wouldn’t flake in another few months time.
We took a $500 reduction in quoted price to allow for painting.
I’d suggest you try do the same - get some money off the guy.

christin, May 13, 6:47am
When he first mentioned it to me, about how the plasterer was concerned about the flaming I told him to tell him to give me a call and could sort something out.

That was in an email, he never replied. So he had the option. I was gonna suggest going halves or something like that.

But will tell him I’m going down the insurance route snd leave it up to him. I have money allocated to other stuff not this right now and it doesn’t look as it did before the foot went through, Insurance will cost me nothing .

mazalinas, May 13, 7:13am
I've had tradespeople in who've done a bodgy job or tried it on by fudging the time spent on the job. It puts me off getting anything repaired now. I hope your guy does the right thing and repaints your ceiling as he was careless and put his foot through it.

christin, May 13, 3:01pm
Thanks. Insurance says they will contact his insurance and sort it: I don’t lose any excess so will go that route.

Might just do it and tell him I’ve done it.

The thing is he doesn’t know I heard him saying “I didn’t say I’d paint the ceiling” so had t said no officially yet but it has t been done so will just go ahead.

It’s just a bit frustrating as it would be different if it was a nice house; it’s not hideous but I’m sure he’s just thinking it’s a do you so don’t bother. It’s still my house I worked hard to pay for

pleco, May 13, 3:08pm
This is appalling. Don't pay till he returns the ceiling to the condition it was in before he started and completes the job with a COC. It should not take months to complete the job. I have had a house rewired in the past and it took two guys 2-3 days from memory. This is really unprofessional.

stevo2, May 13, 3:34pm
Do you want -
* Just the patch repainted?
* The whole ceiling repainted over top of all your existing flaking paint (ie making it all the same colour but still flaking)?
* Your whole ceiling sanded to remove existing flaking, skimmed by gibstopper and repainted with 3 coats giving you a new/nice finish?
