I posted in General but they are pretty much taking the piss out of me for being grossed out by it and killing it :( It was huge and dripping milky stuff, couldn't get a good pic with my crappy phone but here are a couple, I looked at the Te Papa spider guide but none of them looked right, it had the biggest fat body *shudder* I would just like to know what it is as Ive never seen one like it, I realise its hard to tell as the pics are mostly of the back of it, but if anyone knows I would love to know :)

Looks like a harmless orb spider to me. Will not harm you in any way. Sorry, not a piss take here but why do people see the need to kill spiders. If you take a close look they are quite beautiful and deserve to be respected. The only spiders I dispatch are white tails.

I had a white tail crawling on the back of my thigh a few weeks ago when I was asleep (well it woke me up) and Im pregnant so I dont trust anything creepy-crawlie-bitey at the moment, I dont normally kill spiders but this thing gave me a bad feeling!

I agree, they are quite beautiful and deserve to be respected. Like this one I found in the wood pile: http://twohedwlf.angryhosting.com/spider2.JPG

I respected it a couple times with a log, just to be sure.

Holy moly that thing is ungodly! I thank you for your respect, well played :)

I used to be so scared/horrified of spiders until I realised most of them are completely harmless. Then I took a better look at them. Their colours and markings are very beautiful and I think that some arachnibhobes need to take another more realistic look at them and top squishing any bugs they find unacceptable.

They said it was an orb web in your other thread, harmless

That's an awesome photograph there fella.

The woodpile spider looks like a wolf spider. A common spider, very useful and harmless, to humans anyway. A non web builder/hunting spider. Have both them and Orb spiders round here. The Orbs are a pain with their huge messy webs.

The thing is more scared of you. you know spiders eat more bugs per year than birds do? So if you prefer flies and other insects, go ahead and try to eliminate the poor spiders.

I found this quite beautiful for my photography classes

Well we're in NZ, not Aussie so chances are slim we'd come across one.

Beats me why people feel the need to kill every spider they see. most will run away if given the chance. I do kill white tips though, but love spiders and "creepy crawlies". Fascinating creatures. If I come across a bee/bumblebee looking tired and crook, I always give them a bit of honey. perks them up in no time! Heaps of the orb spiders here, totally harmless.

I lurveeeee spiders - in fact I'm the neighbourhood Weta catcher (tey think I kill them, but I just take them out back & let them go in the bush). Beautiful things. I also have Tara, my tarantula who is just gorgeous. Strangely, the only thing I'm not keen on is Praying Mantis (got bitten as a kid), but again, I would never kill them
edited. now cockroaches - they DESERVE to die - hate them! All types!

groovie1, Feb 26, 9:21pm
Long as they stay outside I'm all good.

maclad, Feb 26, 9:29pm
It is good to see so many "creepy crawly" lovers out there. I love bugs with a passion, they are quite fascinating and my kids and grandies are always curious to take a better look.

ira78, Feb 27, 2:38am
I take pictures. THEN CRUSH.

macandrosie, Feb 27, 1:03pm
Yeah I'm quite keen on spiders myself. Had a lovely long legged thing come up the bath plug hole the other day. I guess in the balance of nature we need spiders as we need flies. They all have specific roles. My mother in law has always hated them & put the fear of spiders into our eldest daughter at a young age. (she's 30 now & still doesn't like them!)

rainrain1, Feb 27, 2:54pm
I don't like them if they surprise me (by landing near, or climbing on) but when I have the upper hand I like them. I have been known to squash a few in my day, but usually I pick them up in a cloth and put them outside

via356, Feb 27, 3:30pm
:/ Just had to check under the table to make sure no spiders there :) Our white-tails have been getting eaten by our daddy long-legses. Saw one one night, instructed husband to dispatch. Husband slightly too slow, white-tail slightly too fast. Next morning, white-tail in small bag hanging from ceiling. Never ever going to evict the daddy-long-legses. May they live long and prosper.

normally just move them outside, except white tails, they get flushed
