And my question had nothing to do with the supplier -they aren't likely to do anything about it. There must be some sort of association etc that this can be reported too. I have contacted Consumer magazine but they weren't much help and the next stop will be Ministry of Consumer Affairs however the general public really need to know what is happening.

It does seem unbelievable. What exactly is leaking? Is there a hole in the porcelain or is the connection between cistern and base leaking? A picture is worth 10000 words.

Trust me it's the porcelain - hairline fractures and nowhere near any seals. The more I hear from others I talk to (including suppliers) it's actually not that unbelievable - it 's quite common but nothing is being done about the poor quality of goods we are getting here.

So how do you pick a good toilet then? Installed an Ideal Standard one a few months back, no leaks but edges of the cistern are poorly formed causing uneven gaps. Retailed at around $700 from memory.
Would've taken it back but it had sat awaiting install for three years.
Now need to buy another for second bathroom. Am happy to pay for quality but a $300 dunny looks very similar to a $800 dunny I'm afraid. I'm also wary of paying "designer" mark up for pretentious junk.

Our latest is also an Ideal Standard but it's fine. I don't think you can pick a good one - it's hit or miss. After our fourth one was installed and leaked I had to look around for another (two leaks from one brand is two too many to take a risk on a third the same) and went to another supplier to see the exact same toilet but for an extra $300. I queried her and the reason for the ridiculous price increase was that the valve system was different, exact same manufacturer of the porcelain and no different to what we had. It seems that many of these pans are manufactured by the same places overseas and then sold to different companies who then add their touch and sell them under different names. So far so good with our fifth toilet tho and good luck in your hunt.

Like I said my son works at a place that supplies retailers and it's common. They DO do something about it, they replace them - to the public. Blame the shit chinese factories - it's nothing to do with the actual company brand. most get them made over there.

Buy NZ made . Bro is a plumber was 40 years & wouldnt supply imported bowls as if there is a problem he has to reinstal it at his own expense even though the supplier replaces it . Time is $$

Didn't know there were any that were still made in NZ. They closed factory down in Dunedin that used to make them.

None locally made. I doubt that Caroma still manufactures in Australia, either.

Years ago I saw a documentary on TV about how a toilet is made. Interesting.
They said that "2 or 3 toilets out of 7 are faulty and the fault gets found at manufacture. Thats faults like cracks and damaged glaze and when its flushed, water spurting out of the bowl. So you don't have to worry about returning wrong dunnies, its common for them to be faulty. But I would expect them to find the faults at the factory.

And no wonder the plumber I talked to said supply your own. and I'll fit it. He mentioned to measure it etc. But sheesh, who'd want to be responsible for that many re installs!

When our bathroom was repaired after the flood, in June, we had a new toilet installed. The builder's account was at Bunnings, and we chose a basic back to wall toilet from there. We've had no problems with it.
