We have now installed three brand new toilets, two of the same brand and model and one a different brand and all three have leaked in different places from the porcelain - not seals etc so def not plumbing issue. Had anyone else had this type of problem? We are at our wits end as to why so many are faulty. We have only noticed this issue as we are putting lino down and have a hardboard flooring down for the lino to be put on and we can see the water staining on the floor. I have to wonder how many new homes that have new systems installed and then tiled and sealed before using are actually leaking but people have no idea.

Chinese toilets from Mega or Bunnies?

yellayella, Oct 31, 4:28pm
First two were but I don't know of any that aren't made in China anymore.

payntr, Oct 31, 4:45pm
I know of a plumber who will not install products from these two outlets because of problems.

farwest, Oct 31, 4:47pm
So they won't install Dux or Caroma toilets? Both brands are sold at Bunnings and Mitre 10.
Plumbers just like to get the rebates from their suppliers.

yellayella, Oct 31, 4:51pm
With all brands from these suppliers? The first two were from Mega and Dux and the last one from Carters - totally different brand.

payntr, Oct 31, 5:02pm
you are probably right, but that's what he told me.

I think you will find its more to do with the customer supplying a cheap and nasty toilet then blaming the plumber when it all goes wrong.
Some people you have trouble with getting money out of them for callbacks that aren't your fault.

payntr, Oct 31, 7:58pm
that's what I thought ,plumber had to replace 14 hotwater valves in a complex ,when they sent them away all were faulty and nobody wants to know.

Plumber put a WC in here from a specialist plumbing shop. Both cistern and bowl leaked and had to be replaced, all fine since.

The plumber said he'd fitted the same type into each apartment - 2 wc's for each, of a three storey apartment block, every one of them leaked and manufacturer had to replace them.

yellayella, Nov 1, 3:50am
Wow! Sounds like our issue is more common than I realised.

What rebates! Husband always recommended the caroma loos from Bunnings for customers. Yes, plumbers get a discount from the suppliers, however often it is still more expensive than the retail stores for certain items.

My son works at a bathroom manufacturer/supplier.
They import basins and loos - and yep, the number of sub-standard ones are shocking.
Plug hole, tap holes not standard size, not lined up right, bubbles in the clay, ll manner of rubbish.
Don't think it is just actual chinese brands, all are made in china. even the Italian stuff, being made there for a while, was like that.

And here's something FYI: He broke one of the pedestal type sinks once. in the hollow stand part, it was filled with dried rice. That's bad? No, the mummified rat in the rice was worse.

This was not a "chinese brand" one either but one of the "posh brand" ones.

Little do we know what we have in our houses these days.

I used to work in a large hardware store - and found that plumbing supply places could offer things like showers and toilets for less than our buy price.

our plumber can sometimes make more money buying the materials and getting his discount , than he can for doing the job. ( would i lie to you ) ?

lythande1, Nov 2, 12:38pm
Bunnings DUx Suite $139. Don't believe you.

yellayella, Nov 2, 1:45pm
Our two that we purchased were $450 each so not cheap.

Six months ago we bought a new toilet from one of the more up-market plumbing suppliers. It was made in Italy. The plumber called me to come and take a look at it. There was a fault in the glaze on the rim which was very noticeable. Within an hour the supplier arrived with a replacement toilet. That too was faulty. The base was supposed to have straight sides where it meets the floor, but this one was like a dog's hind leg. Third time lucky.
Whatever happened to quality control? Presumably there are shipping containers loaded with these shoddy goods coming into NZ every day. What are we supposed to do with the faulty ones? Do they ship them back? Or, do they try to sell them on to some other unsuspecting customer and hope they won't notice or complain?

Sounds like a fair go issue! Anyone want to email them their story? i want to replace ours due to faulty flushing mechanisms (that stick to your fingers they are so light and plasticky), and drop in the bowl and are flushed away to get trapped in the pipes somewhere. happened twice to 2 of us. we have half a flusher on one toilet which is the kids bathroom. it comes out and is difficult to re position so kids dont flush. Managed to rescue the other. .

I am in the slow process of doing up my ensuite. Plumber put in the new shower mixer only to turn it on and find it was faulty. Luckily a agent of the manufacturer was out within a couple of days to fix it. I saw the loo I wanted at mega mitre for $450, ( a very nice englefield one) decided to shop around and got the exact same one at placemakers for $249. And no I didn't go back to mm to get them to beat that price, couldn't beat the customer service at placemakers.

lythande1, Nov 3, 10:18am
Italian manufacturer but actually made in china.
Like I said my son sees heaps of them come like that, and sinks.

pauldw, Nov 3, 11:47am
Is the Importer knowingly bringing in factory 2nds?

3 leaks in a row porous or cracked by overtightening?

yellayella, Nov 4, 5:23am
Fair Go is an option and if we have further problems with toilet number 4 I will definitely get in touch with them.

yellayella, Nov 10, 12:19pm
Toilet saga update. Fourth toilet was installed this morning and plumber did final checks and lo and behold it also leaked. Same problem as previous one - under the rim from the porcelain. It was a $600 toilet so not bottom of the line goods. This is just unbelievable and |I'd like to know who I could contact regarding the second rate quality goods we are being inflicted with here in NZ. Anyone know?

johotech, Nov 10, 1:33pm
You contact the company they were purchased from obviously.

I'm guessing you supplied them, not your plumber. So obviously your plumber isn't just going to take care of this problem for no charge.

yellayella, Nov 10, 1:46pm
Obviously he's not no - why would you think that? Invoices have been sent to the suppliers who supplied the suites to the places they were purchased from.
