The same thing happened to mine and I sent photos to some gardener mag and he said it could of got weed sprayed they are hardy but even spray on the wind would do it. I had 3 quite large ones. Anyway the leaves turned yellow and all droped off and 1 tree died :-(

Have you had a lot of rain lately! Sounds like what happened to my Puka - Phytophthora - a fungal disease causing root rot. If its not too late, could try a fungicide.

first of all, how big is your puka!Is it in the ground, or is it in a pot!How long has it been planted for!Sun or shade! And where are you!

Mature Pukas suffer frost damage even in Auckland and the leaves turn yellow/brown - if that is what it is they will recover,I have just purchased from an auckland nursery 5 pukas with frost damage even though they were in glass houses in Drury not too far from where you are.Too avoid frost damage in future spray with vapourguard which will frost protect to -5 degrees.Phytophera comes on in Pukas in the warmer months when the soil is really warm and wet I lost a Puka in feb in Maraetai to phytophera, but the disease is not around in the winter/spring months.
