Help me to settle an arguement with a know-it-all.

uh I guess it will be easier to strip off than it would be if it were intact, that's about all. Sounds like it needed fixing a while ago!

lythande1, Jan 2, 6:28am
Easier.no, cause you have to sand it to remove the flaking bits.
Then paint.

mrsmay, Jan 2, 6:35am
Thank you! We are going to repaint our roof and hes trying to tell us his will be easier to paint than ours because ours isnt flaking.Knew he was a %$^&!

oh_hunnihunni, Jan 2, 6:47am
Never argue with a know it all.

We really hate it.

cantabman1, Jan 2, 8:08am
It sounds like a lack of prep in the first place has caused the flaking.
I'm am no expert when it comes to painting, but over the years have certainly done my fair share. One thing my dad would always say to me was, with painting anything, the finnish you end up with is only as good as the preperation. he was bang on, as ive learnt over many years.

Very rare to get that special textured effect of painting straight over the flaky stuff. Jeez dont you know nuffin!

lythande1, Jan 3, 4:53am
Just ignore it, he'll find out.

Can getacompressor with sandblasting attachment, easier than wire brushing, but keep the sand100% dry

morrisjvan, Jan 4, 7:08pm
if your paint is flaking it will take forever to get it preped !
I was unfortunate to have a very flakey roof ,must have water blasted it 4-5 times , each time the loose paint came off ok, but the next day the ''stuck'' paint had started lifting at the edges! So it will cost a fortune in labour.

There is a New Zealand paint especially formulated for roofs with flaking paint.Google "Flakaproof Paint" and check it out.I have used it and I have recommended it to a number of people. It's a brilliant product.

welshgirl5, Jan 6, 10:00am
Sometimes it is more cost effective to replace any flaking iron sheets with new.If its a Coloursteel roof, check it is still under Warranty.Be careful what you re-paint it with too, especially if you are within 100 of breaking surf.May be better to consult an expert at either Steel and Tube or New Zealand Steel themselves.

hammer23, Jan 6, 3:39pm
My answer. Let him paint both roofes and let him be the judge while you sit back in your deck chair taking it all in.

tillsbury, Jan 6, 7:24pm
Wait 20 more years then all the paint will have flaked off, easy!

mrsmay, Dec 31, 8:38pm
Help me to settle an arguement with a total know-it-all! Situation: Man needs his roof painted. Roof paint is flaking, badly! He thinks it will be easier and therefore cheaper because of the paint flaking. Hubby and I disagree.
What are your thoughts!

-bookzone-, Dec 31, 8:44pm
For a badly flaking roof, the best thing to do is strip back to bare metal, prime, then two top coats. It's more expensive, but the end result will look better and last longer.

kp11, Dec 31, 9:11pm
Lol.He obviously knows nuthin about painting!

griev, Dec 31, 9:33pm
easier and cheaper than what! when it flakes we have to water blast, then go over with a wire brush and get the stubborn stuff off, then prime those areas then paint VS repainting, water blast and them when dry spray, easy as

hehe,i would not give a know it all a job.#2 is correct.
