Oh god i cant stand them, dont know where i got my phobia from but they just really creep me out. I lived near the bush as a kid so we got the odd one appearing in the house. Even a dead one on the ground I dont like going near, my bro in laws like that with spiders and both his sons have now got a phobia about them, funny to watch them scared of the little jumping spiders etc, it's the big solid ones that run fast that I to dont like

I grew up with the memory of a pair walking on my face in the middle of the night, reinforced by watchingnumbers of the things abandoning my grandfathers back at Orewa in 1958 after he sprayed kerosine round the piles that supported it above the sand. He in turn did that after sliding a bare leg into his jammies one evening only to find a weta already wearing them. If the ugly beasties stay out of our intimate places I guess we could learn to live with each other - meantime they aren't my favourite insect. Though having grown up and broadened my experience I loathe cockroaches more. After I married my big strong English husband I discovered he was deathly afeared of moths. Moths! Good heavens, at least I picked really mean ugly BIG critters!

I really had to laugh. Yesterday we found a weta, my 3 and 4 year old grandies and I. After we talked about them being endangered and needing to be protected in the future we took weta to show it to their adult uncle and his lady. Well, they looked on with abhorence and backed off as far as they could. All the time these two future environmentalists were happily and carefully handling the weta, which after their curiosity was sated they let go unharmed in the garden. Long live the weta.

Wetas are endangered!Theres enough in my overgrown bush / trees to repopulate both NZ islands!Even the cat who loves to hunt/play with them isnt denting their population here! Long live the weta!Yea theyre funky cool creatures I totally agree, but they dont live long when i find them in my bed at night.

Good that you didn't teach them an irrational fear of an insect that will do them no harm. After all, how many people are assaulted and overpowered by insects every day!

Crikey!Your more than welcome to them maclad!Theyre aggressive little buggars that rule their roost around here.Soo many old trees, mulch, overgrown stuff. They are quite cool though in their own prehistoric kinda way.

Yes definitely quite cool in a prehistoric way and harmless unless they bite you, which they are unlikely to do. Todays find was a lovely fragile blue damselfly, totally harmless, but the two afore mentioned still backed off as far as they could and looked at it with abhorence.

The common tree (bush) weta isn't endangered, it's the Giant Weta that is.
The male weta is the one that gets all 'bitey', as it's the one with the big mandibles.

Gotta admire them really. For critters not much bigger than the size of a teaspoon, they do an amazing job defending themselves!Tough little buggars.
