Any homemade recipes for killing them.

5lb hammer but not for use on the marble bench top.

Don't squash them. Any eggs in them can still hatch.

What sort? Gisborne ones? Just let them out, they're harmless. the real "kitchen" ones? Get a pro in to spray.

Had a problem in a rental I had. landlord got a pro in that laid bait. It got rid of them. They were the orange/brown german cockroaches. Cockroach traps and bombs never did as well as the bait.

Harmless I agree, but twice I have heard a 'plop' on my pillow at night & discovered one sitting there waving its feelers at me! Obviously had squirmed inside the window frame & dropped down from there ,NOT a pleasant experience for me (or it!), even tho I am something of an entomologist! Also, they will lay their eggs inside & lots of the little beggars appear, often they hide behind pictures on the wall or under things. And the adults jump if they are alarmed. As far as I'm concerned if they are inside they are DEAD! Outside, I don't care.

The multiple plastic sticks of poison laid around seem to attract them and they then vanish. You can use the contact spray on surfaces

all insects are pests in a kitchen-its common food safety knowledge

Maybe not if they stay outside but when they come inside they are not welcome.

They used to be introduced in the back of second hand fridges or freezers.Parents neighbours had an infestation which came from their neighbours who werent very fussy when disposing of food scraps.

Daughter had a problem with the German variety in a flat in Hamilton. The property manager wanted to get a cleaner in. Daughter said she was not moving in until the place had been treated. Probably came from the flats next door. Work mates daughter lived there and brought some home for mum and dad lol.

I've heard that Gisborne cockroaches aren't a health risk but what? Do they cross their legs on kitchen benches to avoid pooping or peeing? I don't think so. They're welcome to stay in the big outdoors. And like wood chips, so avoid those too close to the house.

I read here that they come into the house on circulars from the letterbox.

That was after I had noticed tiny white spider like bugs on the kitchen bench just after reading my circulates there. Under a magnifying glass they 'looked' like cockroaches, but it's hard to tell at that size.
Then a few months later I noticed a small cockroach, twice, in that area, after catching it in paper towel, soaking it in disinfectant & squashing it, wrapping it in tinfoil & dumping it in the wheelie bin, I haven't seen any more.

Saw another outside when I shifted some fallen hedge branches that were covering a old sack. Decades ago we picked up a old plastic sack in the remote bush & saw hundreds, that's when I found out there are a native version.
Uncommon inside a house though. It's the only insect I detest except wasps.

On TV last night - better to squash them because eggs get squashed - Fly Spray irritates one being sprayed and they expel their eggs that will grow and hatch. I used to flyspray them too, but won't now. They don't mean to come indoors but will get lost if there is garden close to house with vegetation they wander about on; apparently sleep during the day in garden/ wander and feed at night.
