I was reading up on them and they could be a solution for part of our garden, but cannot find anywhere in NZ that might have them.

never seen them in NZ, assuming you mean the unglazed terracotta pots for slow irrigation, how about using a large plastic bottle like a 2 or 2.5 litre soft drink bottle , turning upside down, in a hole in garden with small holes drilled in cap, and in base to slowly release the water

Yeah that is what I mean.
Apparently the basis of ollas is not that water just seeps into the dirt but that the plants actually draw it through the unglazed pottery as required.
