Weatherboards , low sheen or semi gloss

Ok so following on from my previous thread ive used zinssar cover stain on native WBs , some is back to bare timber other stable parts iv'e sanded

i'm not sure if these boards are totara or rimu . i dont understand the difference between semi gloss and low sheen .Is the gloss more durable ? does the gloss shrink back more substantially than the low sheen (affecting the totara primers)

Weatherboards? You mean the outside of the house? You want paint on them, whatever wood it is.
If you mean wood on the inside (not weatherboards) then gloss is shiny, easy to wipe over but shows all imperfections. matt is no shine at all.

Weatherboard
noun
plural noun: weatherboards - each of a series of horizontal boards nailed to outside walls with edges overlapping to keep out the rain.
= Exterior.

And to answer OP's question - we used a 'weathersheild' gloss for our weatherboards - liked the look of it and easier to keep clean (ours are white 1950's).

White gloss always looks good on weatherboards, and as others have said is easy to keep clean. Totara has a straight grain, pinky red colour, rimu is mainly darker red to brown.

On weatherboards gloss for me any day. Looks so clean and sparkling. Matt or low sheen on outside always looks as though it is on need of a paint even if it has just been painted. Actually don't know too many people who use low sheen, the arguments around here are about whether to use semi gloss or high gloss. So about the level of gloss.

Hi Bergkamp, I would use a semi gloss acrylic over low sheen anyday. better UV rating and washes down better. Incidentally, if weatherboards are Totara, should be primed with a water based primer. Have a look here

I use high-gloss paint on weatherboards and low gloss paint on corrugated iron so it is not slippery to walk on.
