What can I do about a half completed job?

I arranged for my house to be rewired by an electrician I have used before.

He set two days aside 2nd December and worked both those days. I have had the new switchboards all the new wires run, about three new power points out in and I assume wiring run to the existing ones (figure he has to have done that for the new board).

Some of the fittings have been changed to new ones. But none of my new lights have been out up and have temporary ones he had out in in the Meantime (his fittings)

Since the two days he has come back a couple of times while I’m at work doing work but haven’t seen him since before Xmas and hasn’t answered any of my last emails.

Just wondering where I stand before I call him snd see if I can sort it out, I was wanting it done soon as need a PowerPoint added for fibre which will be installed soon etc and just want it completed.

I haven’t paid him anything which is good but if I have no luck what is the storey there if I get a new person in and pay him as this guy has already done work erc. And imagine a few $$$ as a few days work done and new board etc

He has also out a hole in the kitchen ceiling as gib wad stood on, he has had someone back and cover it but not plastered or painted,

Thank you

Ringing him will be better. he's probably trying to have a holiday with his children before school starts or even just a holiday for himself and is doing some jobs as he can. if you have a date for fibre being installed then let him know this.

christin, Jan 24, 9:42pm
I tried ringing the other day but no luck.

I have been pretty flexible with him coming back during the day and have a key out for him and don’t mind him having time with his kids but coming up to two months with temp lights hanging down, hole in ceiling snd no replies to email so looking to getting it sorted,

No date for fibre but suspect that’s gonna be last minute so would like to have it out where I can hide the ont etc.

Thanks just not sure if he’s given up on the job snd if I can’t get hold of him how long I wait before getting someone else in to complete etc. and how does that work pay wise.

A lot of contractors are still on holiday. Do not pay him until he has completed the job to your satisfaction.

christin, Jan 24, 10:03pm
Thanks definitely not doing that, I don’t mind him being on holiday but as the job was supposed to be done on 2/3 December it would have been nice to have some communication. Even the days they came back in the week or so following I was never told they just turned up,

At one stage I had no bedroom light and no bathroom light for about a week, at least all lights are going now bar one,

You can always run the fibre off an extension lead. Not ideal but can see you through.

lythande1, Jan 24, 11:10pm
24 Jan? How long do tradies go on holiday for? I'd pay him for what has been done and get someone else to do the rest.

christin, Jan 24, 11:46pm
True. Though I’d prefer mot to as I have a youngish lab dog who thinks cords are ro be chewed, great with shoes erc and growing out of it but wouldnt fully trust her with a big cable going across the room lol

The fibre is being tunnelled in under ground when a power pole is being removed so not by chorus so hoping as they are doing power I tunnel too if the worst comes to the worst they can hopefully put one in as assume they’re qualified, developer is pushing for it to be done for his sake so I’m sure He would do it to get it done,

christin, Jan 24, 11:47pm
I’m not sure how much he’s done $ wise. I don’t want to lay him a certain amount and get someone else in snd that costs me two grand more than orig)al quote all up. Just want some communication ans job finished!

vivac, Jan 24, 11:59pm
December is usually really busy for tradies, but no contact in two months is beyond slack.
If he isnt answering his phone send an email and text, just ask if he is coming back or to let you know if he isnt so you can arrange someong else to finish it up.

christin, Jan 25, 12:04am
Sent him a couple of emails asking what’s happening and saying I’d like to know as off work a few days. Prefer he doesn’t come then!

Will give him another week and then send an email and say if no answer I’ll get someone else in to complete.

It’s stopping me doing painting and plastering and heaps of stuff so just keen to get it finished

christin, Jan 25, 12:05am
Not sure what to do about the massive hole in ceiling he’s supposed to fix too!

Do you know where he lives? If so go knock on his door and get some answers. Don't pay him anything. I suspect trying to find another tradie to complete a "part job" will be a nightmare as nobody will want to issue a certificate for work they didnt do.

kandjaja, Feb 1, 3:00am
What he (^) said. it wont end well for you if you try and engage another tradesman to finish and certify someone else's work. actually I'd go as far as to say you won't find anyone who will consider it.

Contact 'Fair Go' !

christin, Feb 2, 9:31am
I don’t k one where he lives but he has responded saying he will complete in the next two weeks ans asking when I was home ans not home. (Prefer him to do it when I’m not on leave) so here’s hoping!

Hi Christian, did you get any good resolution with this. with this?

elect70, Feb 7, 11:29pm
Ihad a dispute with house owner after rewiring plus additions& light fittings not in the origonal quote &he wouldnt pay for them . i pulled the main fuse & sealed it & refused to issue COC but he got another sparky to issue a new COC & get power on . & avoid paying for the extras Got my $ eventually via disputes trib took 3 months .

christin, Mar 2, 4:05am
Hi, Christine, don’t worry I think a lot of people think I’m Christain. :-)

Well I got hold of him snd he said he’d get it done in the next two weeks, three weeks later I contacted him and he apologised and said he’d put aside thurs afternoon, Friday and complete the job on Monday.

No one turned up any of those days! Monday being today which is lockdown but I also never saw anyone thirs ans fri either.

I emailed him during the weekend saying it is lockdown but I am an essential worker so he was welcome to come today as I a, at work all day. No one showed up.

I’m not sure how to make him come, I told him I have fibre being installed this Monday and want it completed then. I also told him o have someone wanting to move in so want to finish plastering erc before then but still not turning up.

He’s a nice enough guy but so unorganised. I am so glad I haven’t paid anything yet.

christin, Mar 2, 4:09am
Oh and the hole I’m the ceiling. I live in an old 1920s house snd it needs work, the ceiling paint is slightly flaky. He said the plaster that came and bordered up the hole was worried about that, it’s a big ceiling and I guess he thought if he did his bit the rest wouldn’t be great.

I know that’s a job I need to do but wasn’t planning on it now. I told him to get the plaster to discuss with me. No plasterer contact. I figure I’ll pay extra for thr rest of thr ceiling to be done but not paying the lot as wouldn’t be doing it now I’d there wasn’t a big dirty hole there!

Friends having issues too with people not turning up. Half completed jobs. Why is it so hard. Ugh

gyrogearloose, Mar 2, 5:11am
I work in a related industry and agree it's hard. Here are my observations and suggestions.

Observations: They have bigger jobs than yours, you might see their vans parked outside supermarkets being built. Big jobs have strict deadlines, small jobs don't. Your job isn't getting onto the schedule.

Suggestion: Scheduling happens in a meeting late in the week. Find someone at the company who is in the scheduling meeting and ring or email every wednesday, give them options for the next week - eg; I'm home monday morning, all wednesday, thursday afternoon. Eventually they can match you with a tech with an empty gap in their calendar - I'm telling you they want to fill that tech up.

Opps, sorry! "Christian" was an auto-incorrect.
Funnily enough, I often get called Christine, so just answer to it now, lol.

Hope you get your job sorted.

christin, Mar 2, 6:13am
I’ve to,d them that I’ll leave the key out all week and they are welcome to come any time as I’m at work. And did have days scheduled in but don’t arrive. :-(. They’ve had weeks to turn up . I have told them the odd day I’m home for weeks ans said any other time is fine.

I would t have thought a full rewire was a tiny job? New boards new lights, switches etc. not that tiny that they can’t do in a hurry that’s for sure,

christin, Mar 2, 6:13am
I actually get Catherine if someone gets my name wrong,,,, or Linda for some reason!

christin, Aug 14, 4:50am
theyve turned up today. wonder how much they will get done.
im not home but can see the car in my driveway through security cams. so fingers crossed completing the job. !
