1950's Sunbeam Mixmaster cake mixer

Does anyone know of a handyman who refurbishes these? I have my Mum's from the 1950's which has just stopped working. Actually, that's a lie, its stuck on high speed! I actually have another, the same for spare parts and would love it totally reburbished and painted.

Not a specialist Mixmaster person but an electrician that is known in Wellington for their willingness to tackle refurbishment of other older appliances.

They may know of someone like them in Chch or maybe you could come to Welly with a list to things to do, places to see and dropping this off to be fixed could be one pf them.

I know one in Takapuna.

The stuck on high speed means it has a dodgy capacitor which needs to be replaced.

It does need reburshing though. Its never ever had anything done to it, and has always been regularly oiled (and used). Was my Mums and hubby is now having his access to baking (anything that can't be done by hand!) cut till we get it sorted. I really don't want a flash new one, I would love this refurbished.
Thanks for the posts people.

I don't mind sending it somewhere, we go camping and are due for a trip to the North Island in the next year!

Have you tried Saxon Appliances Christchurch

I know someone in Glenfield too, that can at least make an assessment, if you're up this way!
I know of a chap out in Pyramid Valley down there, that used to do appliance fixing - not sure if he still does - may have retired by now - if you're interested!

Would be interested, espcially if its someone retired who does it with love. I don't mind shipping it, its a family heirloom and has so many memories!

Its not something they have parts for. Its 70 years old.

Also stuck on high could mean the speed control assembly is broken. I purchased the last kit in Perth 25 years ago. I knew a repair guy who used the speed control assembly in a recent model and retrofitted it as he found the older machines were more reliable. That was about 15 years ago. He’s well retired now.

Yep we went to them to repair a 1970's Sunbeam mixer, the one with the heavy bowl. They repaired it while we went shopping, just a small electrical switch replacement.

brightlights60, Jun 22, 5:19am
I emailed them and they were not interested. This is a 50's one, way different from a 70's.

Probably avoid S***n in chch if possible I hAD 3 trips there for a 30 yr old door seal for a F&P oven, went online and it arrived in the post 2 days later. They only seem interested in the newer appliances, they know they can supply parts for.

Its not actually a job for a current appliance repair service. Its more a job for a hobby craftsman/retired appliance repair man. Its vintage!

Manukau Appliance Service Centre Ltd, 6 Mana Place, Manukau was the go to man for my mother. He seemed to be able to ressurect the dead such as the campervan microwave, when repalcing it wasn't an option as it was a tight space.
I still have my grandmothers mixer somewhere, with the heavy bowl and 50s style. My mothers well used 1970s Kenwood was given to a friend who is a keen baker and is still going.

At this point I am going op shopping to find a nice, big older cheap cake mixer until I find someone to renovate the two 1950's ones I have.

tygertung, Jun 24, 7:33pm
I could have a go at fixing it for you, however it would be illegal as I don't have an electricians certificate.

brightlights60, Jun 25, 5:09am
Thanks for the offer, but I really want it totally refurbished, powder coated etc.

Have you a Men's Shed in your area, sometimes retired sparkies are there.
