what do you prefer and why . which do you think is more economical for a top loader?

kitty179, Jun 18, 6:01am
I don't go with economy necessarily; the reason I switched to liquid is because the powder leaves white marks on my dark clothing.

erra, Jun 18, 6:10am
I use liquid as well. No white marks on everything now.

mazalinas, Jun 18, 6:34am
Oh is that what those white marks are? Darn it! I just bought a huge bag of Value powder grrrr

tygertung, Jun 18, 6:49am
I use the "tree hugger" type powder and get no white marks using a top loader. I think powder is cheaper too.

mazalinas, Jun 18, 6:50am
Sometimes if I'm caught out I just use dishwashing liquid. All seems to work the same.

megan109, Jun 18, 8:51am
Prefer liquid

annie17111, Jun 18, 9:14am
Powder is cheaper and I've never had white marks but I have a front loader. I switch between powder, liquid and citrus cleaner.

zsazsa777, Jun 18, 9:33am
Our brilliant repairman told us that powder is better for machines.

annie17111, Jun 18, 11:00am
and mine told me liquid.

wine-o-clock, Jun 18, 5:04pm
I use powder and have never had white marks on clothing

lakeview3, Jun 18, 5:46pm
same here, got sick and tired of the white marks

lakeview3, Jun 18, 5:48pm
I never had problems with white marks with the powder until they made those ‘concentrated’ powders =.

I think they removed the sodium carbonate if I recall or reduced it right down. I reckon they did it for no other reason other than it takes up less room on the shelves and to find a way of making us pay more,

lythande1, Jun 18, 6:25pm
Then you are using too much. I use powder - it's cheaper, no marks.

shanreagh, Jun 18, 6:32pm
Marks can come from too much powder, too many clothes being washed at a time and using fabric softener. Turn jeans, dark clothes inside out before washing. Don't wash dark clothes with items that shed, like towels. check pockets for scraps of paper.

I use liquid from a greenshop, only a capful for a normal wash. Use white vinegar as the fabric softener.

I find powder can leave marks if used in a cold wash with not enough water. I use a higher than needed water level on a heavy wash if using powder in cold wash. I prefer liquid but powder is much more economical.

lovelurking, Jun 18, 7:27pm
I’m pretty sure that if you want to, you can dissolve your powder in water and then add it to your wash as a liquid . no more white powder on your clothes or in the drier lint.

budgel, Jun 18, 9:35pm
I think it is easier to use too much liquid, which the manufacturers are happy for you to do. Do most people measure the liquid?
It pays to read the instructions on the back of a packet of powder because some recommend different quantities from others.

Find a commercial laundry using powder? No, all use liquid, either dispensed or fed by hand - powders are based on alkali builders and are like concrete - hard cottons and crap left in machine. Grow up , get in to the 20th century and find out how a liquid leaves cotton worth having.$4 for a liter at New World for about 40 washes - doh

annie17111, Jun 23, 9:14am
I worked in a small commercial laundry and one of our machines we only used powder in it.

retrogold, Jun 23, 5:28pm
Powder but dissolved in hot water first then cold wash, seems to work better.

tygertung, Jun 23, 6:18pm
20th century has finished. Get into the present and use powder.

lythande1, Jun 23, 6:37pm
We have a front loader. Most of the time cold wash. And powder. I say again, no marks if you don't use excess powder.

lilyfield, Jun 23, 7:27pm
Dissolve the powder , store in large bottle and guess what—you got liquid

lovelurking, Jun 23, 7:31pm
Time flies when you’re having fun!
Thinking back though, we’ve got it easy nowadays.
My grandmother chopped wood, carried water and washed with sunlight soap and a washboard while also looking after 6 children when she was a young Mum.
(No wonder she held her babies out over newspapers after they were fed to save washing nappies! )
She got her first electric washing machine when the older siblings were earning and they all chipped in to buy it for her.
I often think of her and count my blessings as I push the buttons on my washing machine and clothes drier.
