Good size, but have had bigger in the toot bushes.
They love barrowing up the centre of them.

Some varieties are endangered you know. Just because it's a bug and spiky isn’t a reason to kill it. Even if it bites, it's hardly going to do any damage to you.

Sounds like an excuse to post pics of a couple from around my house.

Years ago we'd been pulling old iron from a roof and sort of half asleep felt something scratch across my face and thought some iron had fell on my face, then realised I was in bed, turned the light on and pulled back the covers to discover a weta in my bed. Never moved so fast in my life to get away from it. picked it up on something and put it out the window, which i closed immediately.

Years ago I woke up and felt like my hair was moving. Luckily i ran my fingers through from the roots not patted my head. Sent weta flying and it landed on the bed with a plomp. Of course it was dark and I didn't yet know what I had disturbed. Never jumped out of bed so fast in my life.

Weta is just Te Reo colloquial for all NZ varietes of King Crickets.
These are large crickets which exist all around the globe ie Parktown Prawns in South Africa. Asia has some monsters.

I dunno about you people who are all gung ho about these creepy things. Having carried the ptsd for a lifetime after waking up with two of the awful things on my face as a child, if I spot one anywhere near me they get an entire can of flyspray on their butts.

Same goes for cockroaches.

Another weta story. Having a shower the other day and through the misted glass I saw a movement across the floor. "Have we got mice" thinks I.

A bit later I saw something else out of the corner of my eye. Big weta, antenna waving, having a perv at me from the top of the shower cubicle. Flicked it off the top.

When I got out of the shower, intending to liberate it to the garden, it had disappeared.

My grandfather didn't like them much either, and having found one in the leg of his pjs one summer at the bach on the beach at Orewa ( long gone but fondly remembered) he took a spray set up, filled it with kerosine and liberally drenched the underneath of the little house. We grandkids stood on the stairs shrieking with horror as the insects came out onto the grass to escape the stuff.

Oh the sixties were good years, lol.

tweake, May 28, 8:17pm
it shows how big the holes in people homes are that they can crawl in/out so easily.

oh_hunnihunni, May 28, 8:30pm
Round here we call those doors and windows tweake.

tweake, May 28, 8:52pm
i doubt they had the door open.
odds are it went under the cabinet or shower base and through the floor.

oh_hunnihunni, May 28, 9:09pm
My bathroom has louvre windows open 24/7, the bugs love them.

tweake, Jun 1, 2:02am

Looks like a juvenile

yapper, Jun 1, 11:34pm
To me it looks like a grasshopper. Body doesn't look like a weta's to me.

wembley1, Jun 8, 2:37am
Found it! It hadn't crawled under the door. Vacuuming today, I lifter up the wicker clothes basket and there she was. Must have been hungry by now.

articferrit, Jun 8, 2:43am
so . . . did you set it free? or demolish the poor hungry beast?

wembley1, Jun 8, 4:49am
Do you need to ask? Of course I set her free.

muppet_slayer, Jun 9, 6:43am
If you look closely you can see the horn protruding from it's butt, seen looking past the left hind leg. Something weta's have and I presume grasshoppers don't. The feelers look too long to be a grasshopper too.

xs1100, Jun 9, 7:03am
yep double dead if in mine . so dead its next of kin wouldn't recognize it

smallwoods, Jun 9, 6:59pm
Not a "horn" , lol.
