F & P 608 Top loader Code 131

It's an old machine but had been going well until this morning when it stopped , I think, after rinse and empty but not spun out. Great day but early sundown won't help dry a load of dripping wet washing. But anyway is it worth me even taking the back cover off ? Yes, if it's possibly a connection that's worked loose but wondering what the most likely problem may be ?

131 is a repetitive Rotor Position Error. Can be a faulty RPS module, but more commonly corrosion on the RPS connections and/or the wiring loom socket that connects on to it. You need to access the RPS where it's inserted into the motor windings. If you have a machine that has no bottom plate, you may be able to get it from underneath, otherwise it's a matter of dismantling the unit from the top down to the point where you can extract the whole drum assembly and then get to the motor stator and the RPS. Then it's a matter of inspecting the connections and the RPS - if it appears to be just corrosion on the edge connections and/or socket, then clean it up with alcohol or contact cleaner and reinstall. If the RPS module itself appears to be corroded, then a new one will be required.
N.B. corrosion in this area can mean that the main shaft bearing seal is leaking and allowing water down into the motor - check while you're down there.

It won't have a bottom plate or a back cover you can take off. Lie it down on the front panel. Unscrew and remove the rotor with a 16mm or 5/8 socket. Loosen the 4 3/8 bolts holding the windings to the bowl. Don't take them right out. Pull the windings down far enough to remove the RPS. If at all corroded then replace it. Check and clean the connector. The centre of the RPS has a longer locating arm. This goes into the notch cut in the winding plate. Take a good look at how it is located before you remove it. RPS can be seen and bought here 3159332032 F&P charge around $100 for a new one.

Thanks guys, I'll have a look in the morning. I seem to recall a rather rusty bottom plate (so the main shaft bearing seal IS likely leaking ) when I replaced the pump last year, took the back off for that I think. I don't want to get into major disassembly so I'll see how I do from a look with the back off. It's an old machine and probably not worth too much time spent on it but thank you both for your posts.

pamow69 Just saw your post after I (slowly) typed my last one. This is the same machine you sorted for me a while back - faulty mercury(?) switch in the lid. I just had a look and you're right ( of course :-), the back doesn't come off, I must've replaced the pump through the front clip-in hatch. I don't recognize the RPS in the auction but I might still have one in the spare motor I took out of another machine a few years ago. Wind turbine that hasn't happened yet. Thanks for your post too.

Waited the update till I'd done a couple of washes. My spare motor out of my $21 machine from years back had a clean RPS in it and it did the trick. (Pump was from this machine too.) Message board comes through again, thanks guys, much appreciated.
