Buying appliances

It seems that most shops have a number of different brands. And if the appliance needs repair they just call an "engineer" for that particular brand.
Who pays for the repair under guarantee? I assume that the manufacturer pays. Or does the shop pay something?

I had a very good deal from a large appliance-only shop.
I see that hardware shops sell kitchen appliances. Is it wise to buy from them?
I usually buy second-hand appliances which I fix myself if needed. But modern appliances are getting so complicated and the computers pack up and are unfixable at less than the cost of a new appliance.

I don't think the hardware shops are very good at selling appliances! They can't even answer their phone.

If it's under warranty, the manufacturer (or wholesaler - where the retailer buys from - really) does.
That is. the shops warranty. Which starts from the time they get it in store, not when a customer buys it.
And is the usual 1 or 2 years. If it's after that, then the shop you bought it from ends up paying. Because of the CGA. Bit unfair on retailers, but there you go. it's the law.

Best to research brands yourself online first, not the I was happy with shop buying. the I was happy with after sales service with this brand reviews.

Then once you have settled on a brand and model, use pricespy or priceme to see who is selling it cheapest.

I decided on the dishwasher that I wanted. None of the very large chain of shops had any in stock, so it had to be a special order. I had to go to the special order desk, but the guy who did special orders was away until Monday (today). So they were going to phone me on Monday. They didn't phone me. So I phoned them. There is still nobody at the special order desk, so he doesn't answer his phone. Hopeless!

They must be 'special' people.

Talk to a manager, if they have one.

If you want to make a claim under the warranty, you deal with the person / company that sold it to you. it is their responsibility to "sort it out". do not be fobbed off with "you will need to talk to the manufacturer".
Once the seller is "on the case" then it is of no consequence to the buyer who is picking up the tab for the repair, replace or refund. as long as it is not the buyer !
One thing some buyer do not appreciate it is up to the seller / supplier to decide if they will repair, replace or refund. the buyer can not "demand" any one of these !

A few years ago I bought a new Bosch washing machine as they were highly recommended. I decided to pay an extra $100 to have a 5 year guarantee. The machine failed at 4 years 10 months and the engineer said that to fix it would cost more than a new machine. Despite that, the machine worked fine about half the time, so there was probably a bad solder joint on the circuit board.
The shop gave me a new machine of a different brand, and that is going well.
So I like having a guarantee.
Another shop has a dishwasher with a 7 year guarantee. That sounds good to me.
As I have said, I usually get 2nd hand appliances and fix them myself. But modern appliances with computers in them seem almost impossible to fix.

My son bought a drier with a name beginning with E, it failed within 1 year, so got a new replacement, when this failed within the next year, was told he could have another new 1, but as this model was 1k more than the 1 he had , would have to stump up some money. He refused, so got given a different brand and so far hasn't failed. Beware trade depot appliances, as if you're not in Ak or Chch and can actually go into their showrooms, then you'll be in for a long wait. You cannot actually speak to anyone over the phone as they say,'"we'll let them know and they'll ring you back"', which never seems to happen

I was ready to buy a dishwasher. The first shop said the machine would not be available until mid July. The second shop put their price up $150 since yesterday.
But I have found another shop. I shall try there tomorrow.

Extra warranties are a con. You paid for something you already had under the CGA. The CGA would cover you past what these "warranties" say anyway.

I had such poor service from one of the largest retailers about their crap NZ made dishwasher that I will never buy anything from them again.

I just bought a new dishwasher with a 7 year guarantee!
