Beer traps for slugs and snails

dibble35, Sep 23, 10:25pm
So I dont like using slug slam/blitzem type products as i have pets. Last year I used a beer trap while the vege seedlings were young and it worked well. Well the price of beer is expensive, is there anything else i can use that the slugs and snails would be attracted to? Is it the yeast or the sugar or both that they are attracted to? Thnx

I use this recipe, works extremely well. 1/2 tspn yeast 1 tspn sugar 2 cups water. We have a very large garden so about 30 traps around the place, we make up many multiples of this mix. Gets on top of them very quickly. Hope that helps dibble35

Use Tui Quash, pet friendly.

Lovely, thanks. I've just gone and planted out my garden today so i'll need these. Will make them up now. Planted some corn seed and i remember last year how much the slugs and snails loved them when they first popped up. I only have a small vege garden so im thinking 3 traps will be enough. I know last year when I was using beer I got an amazing amount of slugs, was quite gross!

It is gross, indeed, but it works.
I do the beer thing (drink some & use the rest for the sluggies) & all the dead slugs get thrown to the chooks or go on the compost.

What do the slug/snail traps look like? Do you buy them or make them? Thanks.

I bought some in from the UK, was thinking of selling them, appeared to be a great design where you could lift the inside container to get rid of the 'bodies' and then put it back in and the liquid stayed there. Sadly we had to modify them all as the lids broke off and more drainage holes had to be drilled to stop them blocking up, luckily hubby was willing to spend the time fixing them for me so I could use them. You can buy traps on here and at gardening shops but otherwise make your own from margarine containers or similar. That's what I do now when I need more. Cheers

Just gonna say that

You can buy the beer traps at Bunnings, Mitre 10 etc. The one I have is Ezytrap - but right next to them I have 2 traps with holes cut in the side made of lidded plastic containers eg, marg containers etc
