Locating a noggin

Is there a set distance from the ceiling that we should expect to find a nog. We have a stud finder but it's refusing to co-operate

Tap with a hammer at probably around 400mm distances

Dwangs around 800 centers

thank you, will try that

about 2003. It was a kitset from skyline, we believe, and built by the owner at the time.

In a normal 2.4 stud height you could have 3 options
2 nogs @ 800
3 nogs @ 600
or god forbid 1 @ 1200
In some cases they might be offset 1 up 1 down so first set at 550, 1100, 1650 next set at 600, 1200, 1800. next 650, 1300, 1950.

Tap with the hammer works best.

Ifit were older you could even have the eggcrate where there were no nogs but cardboard packing. You can pic those though as the wall thickness is something odd like 60mm.

Skyline garages have 1 in the middle, so 1200 up.

what I'll often do if its going to hang something like a picture or a tv bracket, is once I think I have found it, I'll drill little holes with a small drill bit. Once you hit wood, sorted. Drill either side of wood to find edges. Small holes take 2 secs to fill with plaster. If cutting out a hole for socket, etc, just use the cut out to take in to mitre 10 for a test pot paint match up and use that to touch up small plaster repairs. Done that more than once.

thanks Friendly prawn, that's what he did eventually, and the tiny hole became a bigger hole to put a large hook in.
job done, but thanks guys, I'll ask again when in trouble.

Stud finder will have a variable sensitivity knob. Gradually increase it and you will find the nogs so long as you go up and down the wall slowly.
