Holding sand in place

We are going to scrape our section to level it off after doing a new build. Only probem is it is all sand. We are thinking of bringing in topsoil to cover the sand before hydroseeding with grass seed.

Any ideas about holding the sand/topsoil in place before the grass takes? It is a large area to grass - about 500m2.

Probably a good idea as wind can move bare dry sand. We didn’t do anything after our house was built and had lots of exposed sand. A lot was moved by the wind. It is much better now as we have also learnt to move compacted sand that holds moisture rather than dry light sand.

Doesn't the hydroseeding act as a surface binder?

The hydroseeding binds to the sand but if the sand moves.

We thought the same and ended up loosing the top soil that was brought in. Save your money, the sand will not move if you keep it watered. Biggest problem was the birds that come in by the hundreds and ate the seed. Had to resow a fair bit.

Hang a few old CD's on posts around it - the birds will not come within 20 feet of something that's moving. Plus use the coated seed - they won't eat that!

All the seed was coated and we had so much stuff flapping in the wind I'm surprised the birds were even there. I resowed with uncoated seed and the birds didn't touch it. Something I did note was that the uncoated seed sprouted faster, I can't explain it. We had finches, red polls, sparrows, mallards, silvereyes, yellowheads. It was unbelievable to watch them hoover up the seeds.

if you use CD's, you MUST hang them so they hang free. They need to be able to swing as it is the reflection of the sun on them that scares the birds away.
We've used them extensively in plum trees and never lost any fruit, but I've had people complain and when questioned, they have not had the CD's hanging free.
I'd suggest you fasten some strings across the reseeded area, then hang the CD's from the string. Piece of cake

Yeah, nah, play them a bit of Jimmy H, that will scare the be-jesus out of any bird.

If you have access to some hay it might help to stop erosion by wind and rain and the grass can germinate and grow through it. Quite a common sight to see hay on bare subdivisions.

look into bentonite clay, a light dilution may bind the surface of the sand, ive used in a rocky soil (veg & herbs) & the soil remained fertile.
