maybe if I can inbolt the tube from the motor and rotate the motor in relation to the cutting spool, I may find a better average fuel tank position.

I suspect this is yet another case of using the wrong tool to do a job it is not designed for. Why do you not go back to Stihl from whence you bought said tool and ask them - they might be infinitely better qualified to suggest a solution. Part of which, I grant you, is probably going to be to try and sell you the right tool! But isn't that a whole lot better than buggering up a brand new line trimmer and, probably, invalidating the warranty in the process? I assume it is a hedge you are attacking with a linetrimmer - if it must be motorised, try a hedgetrimmer - and if all else fails - how about a good set of shears? Or is that too hard?

Vertical edge cut !

Are you trying to tell me that we are referring here to lawn edging? Because, if you are - why is the linetrimmer upside down and not merely turned to 90 degrees? You're never going to get a really good edge on a lawn like that - use edging shears.

An fs 38 will do perfect vertical edges and still run perfectly if the engine is correctly tuned and you are holding it correctly (it won't be upside down). I used one for both flush and vertical edging for 5 years. It is now a helicopter engine.

Mate had one, used it commercially. Kept dying and stalling out within the month. There was a fault with one of the filters. It was too fine to let enough of something through. Air or fuel I cant remember. Take out the air filter for a minute or two and see what happens. Could be worth a try?
Oddly enough, it wasn't the stihl agent in Chch who worked this out, but an independent - after the agents said the wrong fuel mix and non stihl oil had been used, so it wasn't a warranty repair. (The user has been mixing fuel for Stihl products for 5 years with no issues) The same issue occurred within a week after repair, so took it to a non Stihl agent. Trimmer has been going fine since the filter problem was sorted.
Actually, now that I think about it, it may have been the spark arrestor mesh in the muffler, that was too fine, and got blocked with carbon particulate. The fix was to remove it, as the area it is used in is not likely to ever be dry enough to cause a fire from a remotely possibly spark.
It wasn't a case of the thing being starved of air, but not being able to exhaust properly.
You could also try that, provided you are not in a dry area. Process of elimination, sometimes.
(This was on a machine less than a month old BTW, not an old hack)

yes I hAD the same problem with my Stihl trimmer 2 trips to Stihl shop, 2nd trip they removed the spark arrestor, problem solved, never had any problems with carbon setting fire to things

Stihl got problems? Mine seems to be okay if you set the revs high, maybe the wee pumper diaphragm in the carb is pumping fuel better at higher revs?

Yes I saw the YouTube video on cleaning the exhaust spark arrestor gauze filter, but my Stihl only ran badly when the unit was rotated upside down and would correct if rotated back to its upright position. Plus it was Brand New. I have had two McCulloch weedeaters that ran beautifully in any rotation. A good brand like Stihl should be better than this!

Totally off topic but love my Stihl FS 45. Put the poly blades on it and finally finished my over 1m tall tough grass on my section.

New Stihl linetrimmer, FS-38 FS-45 don't run well when upside down to do a vertical edge cut. They have an oddly L shaped fuel tank that I suspect does not feed fuel well when inverted. Huskies have the same shaped tank. Most other linetrimmer weedeaters do not gave these odd designed fuel tanks. Any others experience this?

I have a rat-cheap one with same problem, I just tip it to the other side.

Will the handle & cable drive head move around to any angle you like? [or am i getting my horizontal & vertical confused with what you're trying to trim! ].
