If I cut a black currant bush down near the ground will it send up shoots.
At present it is a rounded mass of old cut off branches at it's base.

With plants like currants, it is good to prune a third of the plant each year after fruiting. That way you keep it in control, but always have new wood. I think blackcurrants fruit best on 2 year old wood and redcurrants on 1 yr.
Have a google for pruning currant bushes to find out for sure.

I used to pick and prune at the same time with an eye to easy harvesting by keeping the shape manageable. Those were mature and previously well managed bushes so I suspect it was an easier task than dealing with neglected plants.
Thank heavens for google, how did we manage before?

I've got all my gardening books still. It's actually often quicker to get out the book to find info than to trawl thru all the weird pages that google thinks you want to read

That stem borer is a nuisance. Unfortunately you can't seem to buy the pheremone traps for the home garden?

Why nothing this year?

I freeze mine as Icecubes, although you could make ice blocks if you added sugar?

they fruit on the nice young green shoots that should be there now, ( so next year they will have the fruit and the green shoots that grow next spring will fruit the following year. The shoots that have fruited this year can be pruned now right down to the base, I pruned mine as I picked ( saved bending over to pick!) so my plants only have about 5 - 6 nice green shoots ( they look a bit bald but trust me more will grow and it will be bushy next Xmas. Those 5 - 6 branches are the only ones that will fruit ) Mine gets the odd bit of borer too but just prune those branches out
