External CCTV cameras are they worth it?

I'm thinking of putting in 3 to 4 cameras to cover external doors to our house. While I think its a good thing to do if you can afford it; I'm also wondering what I''m going to gain and whether its going to be worth the time to maintain and review the recorded information on a regular basis as I haven't had a problem for at least 10 years?

Go to a hunting and fishing store and get a trail / game camera. Will operate on motion recording information. Some are viewable from your phone. Place in a hidden area on your property. A cost effective option

I have a 4 camera system covering my property, I have looked back on recordings about 4 times in the 4 years I have had them, once was for the Police when they were looking for a prowler who the neighbor thought had gone in over my fence to their property (they were wrong) not sure that they are worth it apart from the peace of mind in case there is ever a problem, my system can be viewed on my mobile and set to record and or send a text when there is an activation, Swannview is the system

I am in the process of installing a four camera wireless system that I bought here on trademe. The hardware isnt hard to fit, but the software instructions are a bit hard to follow, but I have it working. good clear pix day and night. It gives peace of mind, and could be a deterrent.

If you get a good quality recorder, it should be able to be set up for motion activated recording. That is, each camera only records if it detects movement. This minimizes the amount of footage you need to check. Much like dashcams in vehicles, you may never see anything of interest or value - but that one time when something happens is when a CCTV system earns its keep.
You may not have had any problems for 10 years, but that doesn't mean something isn't going to happen next week. With the rise in property crime and people committing burglaries to fund their drug habits I see CCTV as important as good locks on the doors.

I'm having 4 camera system professionally installed next week.

Up until now I was using USB webcams with an old computer. There were 3 instances that they came in very handy and once the word got out the behaviour of mainly school kids has improved remarkably. So I decided to upgrade to a better system with a heap of storage and night vision. Plenty of undesirables out there to catch.

Well worth it. We have a 4 camera motion detecting system with backup battery and hardrive and dedicated monitor so we can see it anytime from inside. Has come in handy many times. Great night vision too.

As well as cameras inside my place I had cameras facing along the footpath each way. Expert opinion is that that is legal along your property boundary.
So I can see what kind of vehicle that the crims use.
Once a tagger that I caught made the news, tagging and theft and vandalism has almost stopped for several years now.
All my real cameras are hidden. Someone did steal a fake camera that I put up in front of a real camera. It was 4 metres up in the air!

I'm having a couple installed in a few weeks, the chap who is going to do it expects to have to block out neigbour's windows as this is a new subdivision and there is no foliage yet, but the neighbour opposite might like us to include his driveway anyway, I will ask him.

If the intruders wear hoodies and gloves the cameras are pretty much useless for identification. Sensor lights do however startle them and hopefully they scarper. Burglars invariably go for the easily disposable items.

My set up is up & running most pleased with the clarity of images and the night vision is fantastic. Should have invested in them years back.

Not really useless, many a crim has been caught just on physical/ clothing/ timing & behavior descriptions

Yep and body language.
