Polycarbonate sheeting

islandbreeze, May 10, 7:40pm
Has anyone used polycarbonate shetting over deck roof that has milky white look to it.

trade4us2, May 10, 9:19pm
I doubt that it's polycarbonate, it's probably pvc, that doesn't last as long.

Added to that a lot of those polycarbonate products create a lot of heat,Our uv rays are pretty intense,if you have good air circulation it won’t be too bad.

You can get tinted/coloured polycarbonate eg Suntuff Ice or there's an Opal in another brand.

is there a reason for asking ?

I'd have gone for something like this if I had of had the money. I put up a tinted, highish UV protection, corrugated roof over my deck and it has made a huge difference compared to the old fibreglass type product that had gone opaque, was very brittle and had several holes in it. It is a lot cooler than the previous covering. but I dont like the joins and how they collect the dirt and hold water in between the sheets.

It'll be PVC. Has a useful life of less than 5 years:( Flick it with your fingernail after its been in the sun for a couple of years and it'll disintegrate). No idea why they even make the stuff, its hopeless.

trade4us2, May 12, 11:27am
If it's cheap, it's PVC.

I intend buying 20mm triple wall polycarbonate sheet when I replace the existing thin polycarbonate. The dirt gets into the joins, and it loses a lot of heat.
I'm busy installing 12mm mesh over my roof to stop getting holes from flying objects.

This stuff has a 20yr UV guarantee.

pauldw, May 12, 2:11pm
Against what? I have another fibreglass product that has remained physically intact but has clouded over.

budgel, May 13, 10:25am
I think UV is a hint, so I would guess UV degradation.

pauldw, May 13, 12:01pm
I can't find the Easiroll warranty but another fibreglass product guarantees water tightness for 25 years but only 70% of original transparency after 15 years compared with 89% for its polycarbonate sheet.

Too many options now - polycarb, acrylic, pvc, laminated glass, lexan, etc tinted, uv etc different thicknesses, lengths, widths.

I replaced some sheets of corrugated iron on my garage with cheap non - polycarbonate sheets and cooked on a summers day so had to get on the roof and paint white wash on it.

Have used tinted suntuff on several covered decks I have built for customers with excellent results. A lot cooler.

we bought a house with a pergola to the side. the roofing was a shadecloth, nice and cool, BUT in the winter we got saturated moving from the house to the garage, so we installed some sort of 'plastic' roofing. Too long ago now for me to remember the name.
Instantly we had a raised temperature of several degrees and the house became unbearable hot where previously we had enjoyed a cool summer house, and a warm house in winter.
after suffering for several summers we installed a white shadecloth-type covering under the 'plastic' and again enjoyed a cooler house. This last summer was the hottest we have had since buying here ten years ago, and without that white cover, we would have been suffering immesurably.

just saying this for anyone else who is suffering from the heat that a similar covering may be creating

flying objects as in, meteorites, space junk, runaway asteroids, nah just curious

Well, a golf ball made a hole in my roof at 2am one night last month, probably from the same place where the young son and friends had a boozy party and were throwing water bombs about 15 metres down on my house.
Also the hailstorm last week was heavy enough to damage the roof, so I am glad of the mesh.
