Mulch

nonumbers, Dec 17, 9:00pm
Can I use mulch from trees (conifer, birch and cotoneaster) around dahlias and day lilies. It's quite 'soft' and is breaking down quite quickly, but the garden is weed heaven and the plants do not need me diggiing around their roots every week or so.
TIA

I regularly use it. But its a bit labour intensive as I like to chop it up into smaller pieces however it stays in place well and if the leaves are biggerthey tend to stay in place well and not blow around. I mix it up with grass clippings as well.

I wouldnt add to much of the conifer needles as they may make the soil more acid.

I'm interested in replies to this one too.
I have lots of Cyprus Lilandi (I think they are called - sorry about spelling), as a perimter around our large garden, and would like to trim them, put them through the chipper and add to the gardens as mulch. Will this be okay! The gardens currently have barch shreds over newspaper I put down about three years ago.
Thanks in advance for you help.

Cyprus Leylandii.Should make good mulch as long as it doesnt get blown around by the wind
