Rhubarb taste

smoocherpete, Aug 24, 4:01pm
I've noticed rhubarb plants are in the garden centres now. Several years ago I had one, but the taste was not as strong as I remember. With the new varieties coming out, has anyone got an opinion which tastes the best? Thanks.

I wasnt aware that different types of rhubarb tasted different, I just googled it and there is a lot of information. My summer and winter rhubarb both grow all year round so Im no help.

Not so much different as stronger tasting. One that I bought about about ten years ago had a very mild taste compared to what I remembered from my childhood. And I don't think it is ageing tastebuds!

Try cooking rhubarb with sago, you dont need as much sugar and it sort of sets, (and that makes me sound really old!)

I love rhubarb and strawberries cooked together. My husband adores rhubarb any way it's served.

I have some old varieties that I have no idea about names etc and I have some newer kinds that are really red right to the leaf. I think a lot depends on how you cook it too regarding flavour. I just wash mine, chop it into 1-2 inch lengths and put it in a pyrex dish. Put about 1/2 cup of brown sugar on it and the juice of 1/2 an orange (or mandarin) No extra water. Pop the lid on and cook in the microwave for 2 minutes half power, stir and do again till it is tender. The amount of brown sugar depends on the time of year too as the rhubarb seems sweeter in summer. (mine grows all year round) but 1/2 cup seems about right.

Rhubarb are very heavy feeders, the more animal manure you give them the better.

Thanks, the green one is probably Victoria. That might have been the variety I had earlier.

Thanks, I've read that elsewhere too. I'm on to it.

Thanks crazynana, I'll try that when I get some.

Thanks, sounds like a fridge jam type of thing.

My late dad used to grow rhubarb, our plants were host to large furry spiders which he loved to pick up and show people.
The leaves of rhubarb are very poisonous if eaten.

Thanks, I know not to eat the leaves.
