So no shock. I'm used to step down as we have a couple of 230V to 110V.
No need for that if you have one of those things - small extension with switches and diodes?

rare to use isolating transformers now, use RCD instead.

Correct. It improved the safety of old tools that weren't double insulated, or if you cut through the power cord.
Modern RCDs are cheaper, lighter, safer and generally better.
