I hate them too. It’s amazing how many people leave them on their appliances and also things like toilet cisterns. But when you go to remove them it’s not easy. I don’t understand why manufacturers can’t use easy-peel labels. To answer your question - I think meths (methylated spirits, not P) might help but be careful on some plastics.

Acetone. [nail polish remover]

You can get specific stuff for taking labels off. I think the Warehouse has it but I am sure someone on here will know for sure. Tea tree oil is good too. You have to be careful with nail polish remover as it can affect the whiteware surface.

Might pay to record the details though.

Eucalyptus oil should work a treat.

De-Solv-it. I bought a slim spray bottle from the supermarket years ago. If they don't have it, I presume it could be found at a hardware store.

For 8yrs I've been eyeing up a label on the dishwasher at this house we're renting, but didn't try to remove it in case De-Solv-it didn't work. I peeled from one corner only to find it was one of those easily removeable ones. Duh!

Thank you everyone for your replies. what I did, was peel off the plastic top of label. then wet what was left with soapy water and got that off. Then used Eucalyptus oil to take off the sticky stuff. Then cleaned it with window cleaner and wow it looks a whole lot better . it all took half an hour :-)
