Feeding Tui

When can you start feeding tui sugar water.

We have fed them all year round in the feeders which are enclosed except for the little yellow center where they insert their beak, normally they are here all the time except for a very short period in early spring, however this year we were away at a grandsons wedding for ten days and the feeders ran dry, since then (late Jan ) the Tui have disappeared for first time in several years, we miss them a lot, there are bellbirds using the feeders though, and they are having a peaceful time not being bullied.

The tui I was feeding suddenly stopped coming over summer and I have just started putting the sugar water out again - for a lone tui. Hopefully more will come around in the coming weeks.

When I lived in an area with heaps of Tui, I put out sugar water & got wasps, instead!

We give our Tui 1/2 an orange and they love it. I find they do disappear from time to time especially when the local banksia trees are in full flower. They come back and let us know when they want food again. This summer with it being hot and dry at times they have been around constantly, and if we have had a storm presumably their natural nectar source had been diluted so they turn up then too.

I put sugar water out today, first time for ages, but it attracts the wasps. I've notice Wax eyes, and a Bellbird coming in looking for something to eat, I reckon they're early this year, so I have given in to them

my sister-in-law adds red food colouring to her sugar water as tui are attracted to colour. Also makes it easier for her to see when the water is low and needs replacing!
