Timer for H/W cylinder

timbo69, Nov 16, 5:18am
Which is the best timer for only allowing a H/W cylinder to come on in the night? (say ~11pm-4am) I almost have solar tubes on my roof and just want to use cheap power in night to top up if required. Looking to go to flick energy . Have one 3kw element and one 2kw element in two different cylinders (so need two timers)

Just go to your nearest electrical trade outlet and they will sell you a suitable timer, but you will need to get an electrician to install it.

We are with Contact and have night rate from 9pm untill 7am and our hot water is only heated at night rate (about 13 cents per KW/H). We used to have a timer but removed it as the ripple control for the hot water only comes on at night. We used a timer that was suitable with a 3KW nightstore heater but the contacts started to burn.
We did a price comparison with several companies and they could not beat our rate. Contact gave us 20% off our bill if we pay on time.

I have same setup and use the $9.00 ones from Mitre10. Work well.

Don't think they would be rated for 3kw. Most HWC are not fitted with a 3pin plug either! However I don't know if that's a legal requirement or simply just the way it's done.

Flick energy are significantly cheaper off peak - between 1/3 and 1/2 of what your quoting

We are with Mercury. Our hot water comes on at 11 pm and off at 7 am. All part of our plan. Very cheap hot water rate.

Do you know what the rate is? what are you fixed charges?

Have a look at the website. Our daily fixed charge is only $10/ month. We have a special meter for the hot water that has the timer built into it. Can't recall the two rates/ unit but our power is really cheap, especially since we put in a new free standing fireplace and don't use electric heaters in the winter.
