Sometimes you can get a flat blade screw driver to grip where the phillips used to be, enough to undo it. The edges of the flat blade dig into the screw and allows it to turn. Has to be a fairly small flat blade screw driver though.

what about one of those drills that are guaranteed to remove stripped and damaged screws. We've got a whole set of them and never used them, but you never know what you need something like that so bought the set
