Be aware that if it has lights on it that are on 24/7, that will cost you around 30 or 40 cents extra per month in power.

Yes - lights are absolutely unnecessary.

I am not a fan of them, it is better to have additional power points fitted but if you do buy one, steer clear of the Bunnings and similar cheapies, they have problems with weak terminals where the plug goes in and some of the sockets stop working, this can also lead to the plugs overheating and potentially starting a fire

You mean like the ones with little neon power indicator lamps? You'd be looking at milliwatts power draw. If it was 100mw that would add up 74 watt hours/month or about 2 cents worth of electricity. Even if it was 30 cents that's pretty negligible.

The better ones have a circuit breaker built in, stops issues when people overload them.
As a non-technical check for quality, weight helps, light ones are junk, heavier ones better.

I don't think I've ever seen a good one.

My powerboards use over 1 watt with the lights on.

I see in Aussie their power boards have a plastic internal cover that rotates and covers the exposed point from prying fingers. Needs to be rotated to plug in. Brilliant idea that I havent seen here.

I'm sure you know they aren't rated for building sites.

I've seen these with holes broken in the plastic exposing the conductive parts, as well as the lead pulled out exposing the wires (on the same one, on a building site).

What are transformer plugs? Surely people don't use isolation transformers any more? (that I used to make 50 years ago)

dbab, Jun 13, 9:48am
We use these, and have found them to be great.

They mean the wall warts - larger style transformers that supply the site radio or some rechargeable tools.
They just mean that there's a couple of outlets wider apart to accommodate them.

We use these and then the guys plug their multiboxes into them if they need more leads.

I mean good that you use them, but not good that there aren't enough of the proper ones.

Best brand = HPM
Best prices = Bunnings

Avoid the cheap chinese plastic ones. They start fires. I know, I've seen the aftermath. How they're allowed to be sold here beats me.
