Unblocking downpipes?

rats123, Jan 10, 9:30am
Are there any chemicals you can buy to unblocked clogged downpipes? I got a bunch of leaves and dirt clogging one at my place. Thanks

nope, wire and a garden hose

and divert it away from the gulley trap too, unless you want to have to clean that out by hand next week

draino ( caustic soda) has very little effect on leaves and no effect on dirt

can you get to the outlet end of the downpipe, if you can push your garden hose up and turn it on, keep working the hose in and out and all the cr@p will come out

Unfortunately I can't because it doesn't open out. It's connected to the storm water line.

cut it and put in a join

I can just picture my DH up on the roof with a wire and a hose, if it is only leaves, depending on what is blocking your down pipe you should be able to clean it and it will wash away, something more solid like a dead bird you would need to hook it up the pipe.

Disconnect the down pipe and take it off. Then shake the muck out and rinse clean

Stormwater shouldnt be going into a gulley trap, they are for grey water.

As above - put in a diverter, either hinged flap or flexible pipe, to avoid future problems. Also, fit a cage at the inlet in the guttering.

in towns and cities that have separated systems, we don't have such here
