Putting up 3mm MDF

over existing old damaged gib board.
What sort of pattern should I nail it on with?
I am going to put some liquid nails between the sheets also.

I wouldn't use 3mm as it is very difficult to get flat. But if you really must, I would glue it only. No nails. Use a vinyl adhesive or tile adhesive and a notched trowel.

3mm MDF will never go over damaged gib board flat and look any good.

But if you must adhesive fix it do not use nails.

One way would be contact glue like Ados and treat it like Formica: contact glue the whole surface;

Personally, I would be totally avoiding the MDF.

On a recent property renovation where the walls were in poor condition with multiple layers of wallpaper, I used a woven glass fiber product similar to this:

Comes in 1m wide rolls. Easier than wallpaper to hang. Paint it to any colour. You would have to paint the MDF anyway but this would give a much better finish.

Looks good and for sure better than MDF, what sort of cost to buy per m2?

Just replace the gib.

Just found the one I used.
http://www.intersourceco.com/id111.html

Cost $8.30/m2 incl GST in 2012

The problem I had, was layers of half stripped off wallpaper that had been wallpapered over. The wallpaper was quite sound, but the main problem was in a hallway, with a light source at the end which showed up every little defect in the walls.

Because the cloth covering is textured, it hides all the blemishes. Just roughly patch the gib, apply some sealer to the patches, then hang the stuff in 1m wide drops. When dry, undercoat with a roller, then the top coats can be sprayed. (can't spray the first coat because of the woven texture needs to be filled with paint).

I agree easy option is just replace the gib. 3 mm custom wood will not go over gib very well and could later on come off.

the other thing to watch is how moisture in you house travels.
at times walls dry to the inside of the house. if you put coverings on the wall that moisture can't get through you run the risk of moisture staying in the walls.

if the gib is that bad i would just regib.
