Codlin moth

Traps and baits.Anyone got a tried and tested good recipe for the purpose. If so, please share in here. Some recipes in Google is asking for ammonia in it ,is it same thing as cloudy ammonia? Your answers will be much appreciated.

Mmmm tricky one to treat. I have heard that if you use a sticky trap, you should tie to a tree nearby and NOT on the apple tree. You want the moth to be attracted away from the apple tree.

Not sure about the ammonia.

I tried a recipe from the net last year involving ammonia (I used cloudy) and have to say I think it worked well. Hung empty milk containers in the trees with big holes for the moths to fly into, replenish every 2 weeks to keep fresh. I also used fruit tree sticky tape (nightmare to put on and didn't catch a single bug). Look on youtube for recipes, lots out there, and look at

best of luck, these pricks ruin the apples totally given half a chance. Bought Carbaryl also but this will be the very last resort, I'll be trying the liquids again first this year.

The sticky tape is to catch the males climbing the tree looking for a bonk.
And the pheromone traps are about as much use as a chocolate teapot I've found.Maybe used as a guide for when they are flying so you can spray. I think you'll have an improvement with the liquid recipes.

I'm surprised the author of that article for the Southland Times hasn't referred to the work being done by Robert and Robyn Guyton, who have been collecting heritage apple varieties in Southland for many years. they were on Country Calendar a few weeks ago, and he writes for NZ Gardener.
This is part of the project:

I put a pot of broad leaf chives under my apple tree last season as they are supposed to deter aphids and prevent black spot among other things. It may be a complete fluke, but for the first time in 20 years I had almost zero codlin moth damage to my apples.

Hence this year I'm growing another large pot of them (the first pot is still going as they will self seed after a couple of years, and bulbs can be split after a few years and so one way or another it's easy to keep them going).

I guess I'll know if it was a fluke or not after this season.
Purple flowers in late spring are also good for attracting bees.

Set the traps well away from your trees or u will attract every neighbours moth's to yours. Have a good spraying routine, before bud, after bud, before fruiting, during fruiting- not during flowering as you will kill off the insects you need for pollinating. Spray the trunks and upside down into nooks. If your'e going organic then use organic products or make your own sprays.
