Woodturning

I want to turn some 1.1 metre long Kauri down to 45mm thick in a metal lathe, but as I get near the middle the wood starts vibrating and I'm worried that it will fling out and injure me!

Well that's all very well for round timber. But mine is square and I want to make it round!

A lathe makes things round. Make a round bit for the steady to go on near the middle first.

The timber won't fit right through the headstock until I make it round. I can't make the bit in the middle round because it vibrates!

Another thing you can do is make it not square first. After you have found the centres, take the corners off to make it octagonal. Makes it run much smoother in the lathe.

make them in half length and dowel/drill the ends to glue.

Maybe I could attach a router to the tool post and rotate the timber slowly.

What about using a router and "round over" bit to rough the blanks to just over 45mm dia. 4 runs and round over each corner. Now it should be round enough to put in the lathe with a "steady" and finish it perfectly?

I have a router lathe which I built and improved on the sloppy ones that were on the market. Besides making material round it will taper it or cut fancy spirals l/h & r/h, machine flats in fact do most that is dividable by 24.
