Wine barrels (bottoms rotted out) - uses?

I have two large wine barrels with the bottoms rotted out. I'd be interested to hear of ideas for their uses now - seems too good to throw away.

You can still use them as planters - just need to put them places where the plants can grow through to the soil. So, if you are lucky enough to have pavers where you want them - just remove a few pavers! Or, you can make a feature in a bed by using them as a height element. They will eventually rot away by being in contact with the soil but if you can keep the base on some free draining medium - like stones, for example, they should last that bit longer.

I stripped mine down and used the staves and bands in a garden artwork for the fence. Great fun.

Filling in the bands with concrete can make cool pavers.

Just get a piece of treated ply say 12 or 15mm thick, draw a circle slightly bigger than the base (nail, string, pencil). Use a jigsaw to cut it out then drop it into the top as a new base and presto, a re-modeled planter.

. and have the bottom of the barrel on some bricks or small pavers so it's not in contact with the ground/deck/concrete/etc, and out of any water, so it'll last longer.

put plants in pots in them, put something on bottom to raise the level of is, have a nice summer display or herbs etc
