Any electricians on here?

Last night I switched on an element on my stove, followed by a big bang. no t.v or fridge going - found the overload switch on the meter was up - reset it - stove working except offending element - a t.v etc back on . would it be the element, wiring or maybe a fuse at the back of the stove blown - electrician will be called to-morrow - is it safe to use the stove as it is.?

Use it as it is. Circuit breaker will continue to protect it as has happened already.

No one will be able to guess what the problem is with your stove without looking at it. Newer stoves don't have fuses for elements.

thanks johotech - - the stove is a simpson Gemini - bought 17 years ago - ( I silently hoped the whole thing had blown - new stove for me) - have only had 1 new element in all that time! I have noticed that my cakes etc have browned on the top and undercooked on the bottom - fingers crossed it will conk out too - by the way I am 80 (nearly) and still do all my cooking . Thank once again Have a good life

I take it the element is one of those 'spiral' radiant types?

If so, they are easy to replace. Just gently pull it out of its socket, and plug in a new one. An appliance shop should have them for sale - about $50 would be my guess at their cost - haven't bought one in a long time, so not sure.

A lot of Simpson models do have plug in elements. You could try removing the offending one by lifting it up and see if it pulls out away from the connection point. Then you could take it in and get one at any electrical wholesaler.

Or if you would rather get an electrician to do it, make sure they check out the oven elements as well. Often there is a simple problem like a wire burnt off a terminal.

If the oven is in good condition, I would keep fixing it. Anything under $2000 these days, isn't going to be anywhere near the quality and longevity of the one you have now.

Happy cooking ;)
