How much would it cost

To get a set of stairs built about 2 metres long, and 2 metres down?
We are building a new garage that will go over this area, resource consent is granted and now waiting for engineers reports, then builders consent, then quotes. Resource consent is valid for 12 months (reading the fine print) so the steps will just be temporary.

But for the second time in 8 weeks, I have tripped and sprained my ankle. I'm on crutches, it's now the right ankle only the left ankle is still weak from the last accident. I'm really quite worried about doing it again, but can't justify spending loads on something to last 12 months. Am I reasonable thinking $500 or is that ridiculous? I don't want to waste a builders time getting them t come and see if it's going to be over a thousand dollars. It isn't a straight area, it's over a path so curved. Almost dog leg.

Well, I guess you are lucky that you've only sprained your ankles - good job you didn't fall and smack your! What is your health worth? Once the steps are no longer needed maybe you could recycle them some where else?

Maybe put a decent hand rail on your current temporary steps, slow down and be careful !

The shape of the steps, a dog leg, means I don't think we could recycle. Mind you, the garage is going to be huge so maybe the timber could be used for something else. The current steps are uneven pavers, and clay, and partial railway sleepers for edging in places, and concrete. Varying depths, certainly varying levels of solid and not.

My health is important, but so is my bank balance. If it is going to cost an unrealistic amount, I Wil. Have to suck it up and use the path at the other end of the property.

The driveway is ridiculously steep too (hence the new garage).

Bearing in mind the Fav. Quote on your profile. Ring Mitre 10

Kaylin you don't need a set of stairs. What you want is a landscaping guy to set boards into the ground following the rough shape of the existing path then back fill/concrete to form level treads. They don't have to be flash but they must be safe to use. A handrail is just as important. Where in Wgtn are you,I have contractors that may be able to help you but expect to pay more than $500.00. When you get the quote for the garage the garden steps will be insignicant.

You can buy steps at mitre 10 or Bunnings, just need a couple of posts at each side and bolt the side boards on and then slide in the step bits, not overly expensive.

Thanks guys, yeah I know the steps will be insignificant to the garage. I'm rather fearful of the overall cost, I have a budget and am worried I will have an enclosed but not much else garage. Hence not wanting to spend step money.

I will have a look at bunnings (we're in tawa) to get some front boards pegged in, and then back fill it. And I'll get on to the draughtsman to hurry up with regards to the retaining engineer and building consent.
