Can I wash my feather/down filled duvet?

inthecity, Nov 3, 1:07pm
. Or should I get it dry cleaned?

you can but, I would take it the dry cleaners

I have washed mine many times, hung on the line to dry and just give it a good shake or manually try to separate feathers, every hour or so till it is dry. It has worked fine.

You can. But I'd take it to the dry cleaners too. If you don't dry it properly, it will go mouldy inside.

You need a good hot sunny day so it pays to be sure you're getting one before you stuff it in the machine, but like maclad, I've done my two several times a year for the past decade and have had no issues. Mind you, they aren't overstuffed, and I do beat them up on the line, never had any issues with mold or clumping. And the nice lavender woolwash detergent I use makes them smell delish.

Beats chemical cleaners hands down.

Absolutely you can. When we bought our last washing machine we got the biggest available just so we could wash feather duvets. Come summer I wash all my feather duvets and pillows. It can be tricky to get it balanced but it is so worth it. If the weather isn??

Some dry cleaners will not do them because of the risk of getting feathers in their machines.

There is nothing nicer than bedding dried in fresh air on a lovely sunny day. Smells great, better than dry cleaning.

Just washed two feather duvets this week. Picked a fine sunny day with breeze. They were dry in 3 hours but left them out for 5 then straight onto the beds. Fluffed them up several times and again when putting on beds. Much better for it. No lumping of feathers evident.

I washed it and it came up a treat. Thank you.

Good for you now you know you can do it again when necessary. They smell so lovely when dried in the sun.

Buy a silk duvet - washing no problem

I have been washing my feather duvets for many years, I do finish them off in the drier though, just for 20 minutes or so. We have had some of our duvets for 25 years or more.
