Ok, the chip coating is asthetic only and has zero effect on waterproofing. They make these tiles with a paint finish as well which proves that point. Tiles made before the early 80's had a bituminous primer and quite coarse chip which tended to break down. The later versions have an acrylic primer and the chip adheres far better. The later ones are more susceptible to lichen however. We stopped doing coatings about 7 or 8 years ago and concentrate solely on re roofing now as it isn't cost beneficial to recoat the 70's era roofs anymore.

What golfdiver said. the early roofs with bitumen were known as Decromastic. the later with the acrylic were called decrobond. There are companies around that still recoat but if its real old, a replacement roof would be better value.
