Tulips

south Auckland area, I have some lovely tulips in flower but am told they will not over winter in this climate, can anyone give advice please.

they do prefer a cold winter. But you can pop them in the fridge for a while to trick them.

Leave them in the ground they will come up again next year.

they require very cold winters to flower, which is why they flower more successfully in the south island/very frosty north (NOT auckland!)

If you get good serious frosts they should come up again. I don't in West Auckland. I've tried lifting the bulbs and chilling them, but little success, so I do a few and buy fresh each year.

So that's why I bought masses of them for $1 a bag. They are only peeping through now and no doubt won't flower. In auckland.

Grow them every year in Auckland for my customers, put them in the fridge for 4 weeks, Voila !

I am in Christchurch and have tulips in hanging baskets and pots, I leave them in so they multiply, one in hanging basket just come into flower, last year I had the most beautiful show of them, and they lasted so long, started flowing September through to xmas. Been in 3 years now, I will give them another year then will split.
