Do Hollyhocks

rusty-bones, May 11, 7:50pm
flower every year?

icfig, May 11, 8:57pm
They generally only live a few years. If planted early enough then yes.

retrogold, May 11, 10:24pm
MIne don't, I think they are a bi-annual.

maclad, May 11, 11:04pm
I have never had them do more than two years and generally lose a few in between.

maynard9, May 11, 11:14pm
The are bi-annual so they grow one season and flower the next.

I keep the seeds and replant so always have them.

rusty-bones, May 12, 12:38am
Well that's annoying. So do you try to have them alternate I suppose so you always have flowering ones.

maclad, May 12, 12:51am
I buy my hollyhocks each year as seedlings in punnets and they always flower first year. Last year I had spikes 8 to 10 feet tall. Getting them to survive for the next season is not quite so easy.

Mine seed like hell and the original ones still seem to go on for ever!
I end up pulling them out if they pop up in the wrong place . as they often do.

So the ones from the garden centre flower that year?

oh_hunnihunni, May 13, 12:23am
Seeded in autumn I suspect and overwintered to fool their internal clocks. mine seem to clump and I often get second weaker flower stalks in the 'third' year, but really, fresh seed grown plants are more fun (and taller!).

maclad, Jan 11, 12:47am
I have never had problems with plants from the garden centre or with seed either. Both ways they flower first year and for the last two years, my soil is very good, I have had 6' to 9' tall plants. Makes them somewhat hard to stake tho.
